Job Description:

Gaydon, Whitley

Hybrid working is potentially available, depending on the area and manager. JLR is a multi-site business and you’ll be required to spend time working with different departments at several locations.

Our undergraduate programmes offer a direct pipeline to our graduate scheme, which is not eligible for sponsorship. Therefore, JLR will only accept applications from candidates who have the right to work in the UK at the time of converting to the graduate scheme.

ACHIEVE THE EXCEPTIONAL

Your placement year at university could not have come at a more exciting time. The undergraduate placement at JLR launches you into automotive innovation. Apply your learning, satisfy your curiosity, and prepare for a successful career with industry experts. Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.

Your future starts here.

PRODUCT ENGINEERING: FUTURE PROPULSION SYSTEMS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

Fossil fuels have dominated automotive propulsion, but our priorities are evolving. By the end of the decade, Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender will offer electric options, and Jaguar will be fully electric — you have the chance to be part of this journey.

As a Future Propulsion Systems undergraduate, you’ll learn to deliver high-quality propulsion systems of the future. You’ll work in diverse environments, using engineering tools like CAE, CAD, and data analysis, collaborating with various customer groups.

You’ll gain a systems view of the entire delivery landscape, working with programme management, purchasing, manufacturing, and external engineering service providers to create and deliver products meeting quality, cost, and time targets. We value new ideas and perspectives — we encourage you to challenge our thinking and influence our work.

Throughout the year-long programme, you’ll rotate through placements to develop your technical knowledge, working closely with managers to identify suitable opportunities for your growth.

Explore potential teams below. Your placement will depend on your preferences and business needs.

ENGINEERING PROPULSION TEAM

Propulsion engineering at JLR is evolving — combining power, performance, and connectivity to create future driving experiences.

Our brands are built on British engineering, now using cutting-edge research to develop electric drive units, energy storage, engines, batteries, transmissions, and drivelines.

We’re a global team with testing facilities worldwide. With a £15bn investment in electrification, Propulsion is key to JLR’s future as a leader in premium, sustainable electric vehicles, supporting Destination Zero by 2039.

ENGINEERING OPERATIONS (EO) TEAM

Engineering Operations supports innovation and product delivery with modern tools and processes. We deliver world-class products through project management, data analytics, prototype building, and testing.

You may work in Prototype Build or Test Teams, collaborating on critical projects with state-of-the-art technology. You’ll take on responsibilities aligned with your skills and interests, supported by a mentor. Your work will impact our product development and place you at the forefront of propulsion technology.

YOUR DEVELOPMENT

Our undergraduate programmes develop your curiosity and creativity over 12 months. You’ll be part of an innovative team, building business skills like resilience, personal branding, and self-care. Working with experienced professionals, you’ll gain industry insights and apply your academic knowledge.

Shadowing opportunities will deepen your understanding and technical skills. Our Early Careers team will support you throughout, ensuring you maximize every opportunity. By the end, you’ll be prepared to face industry challenges and make a meaningful impact.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

To join, you should be on track for at least a degree in mechanical, electronic, software, chemical, aeronautical, automotive, materials, environmental engineering, aerospace, computer science, mechatronics, maths, or physics.

You should be a problem-solver, curious about business challenges, and driven to innovate. Strong numerical and interpersonal skills, along with confidence to champion new ideas, are essential.

Our placements are open only to penultimate-year students (those returning to their final year or on an integrated master’s after the placement). The programme starts on 7th July 2025.

REWARDS AND BENEFITS

The 2025 salary is £23,434, plus holiday allowance, car purchase/lease schemes, pension, and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.
