Job Description
Jackson Hogg has partnered with a specialist manufacturing business in the Newton Aycliffe area to recruit an Environmental Specialist, reporting to the HSE Manager.
The Environmental Specialist will ensure that the site, its process plant, employees, and contractors operate in compliance with current legislation, guidance, and procedures.
The primary responsibility is to work closely with environmental agencies and consultants to ensure the plant and equipment are designed and operated in accordance with licensing requirements and compliance standards.
1. Apply practical skills and knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Standards.
2. Collaborate with monitoring and analytical companies to ensure corrective actions are implemented based on test results, such as Legionella control in cooling towers and water supplies.
3. Maintain environmental consents in line with the IPPC Permit, including managing discharges to atmosphere, ground, drainage, and rivers, covering areas like plant effluent processes, scrubber systems, and tank controls.
4. Coordinate with waste and chemical analysis providers to ensure corrective actions are taken based on test outcomes.
5. Ensure laboratories and testing facilities operate within ISO accreditation standards (ISO 14001, ISO 9001).
6. Streamline waste monitoring programs to develop a centralized system with KPIs and dashboards.
7. Manage waste transfer documentation and liaise with external bodies to ensure safe and effective waste management and disposal.
8. Provide site teams with systems and information to protect against chemical hazards, in accordance with CHIP 2002.
9. Develop and enforce systems for chemical use and storage, complying with COSHH 2002 regulations.
10. Implement health monitoring systems to demonstrate compliance with REACH requirements.
11. Lead processes for introducing and using new chemicals and raw materials on-site.
12. Develop strategies to foster a positive HSE culture, including behavioral safety initiatives.
13. Coordinate with occupational health providers to establish and recommend onsite health screening programs.
Environmental Specialist Requirements:
* Experience in high-volume production or manufacturing environments.
* Experience working on a COMAH site.
* Involvement with emergency response teams.
* Knowledge of environmental monitoring and waste management principles.
* Strong PC skills for documentation and system implementation.
* Flexibility to work additional hours as needed.
* Decisive, accurate, creative, and forward-thinking.
* Ability to motivate, persuade, and negotiate effectively.
Education/Qualifications:
* Degree in Environmental or Health & Safety related discipline.
* Accredited lead auditor certification in ISO 14001/45001.
