Head of English (16-18)
Barking & Dagenham College is recruiting a Head of Department for English 16-18. The role is full‑time, permanent, with a teaching commitment of 4 hours per week.
Base Pay Range
£55,566 to £69,566 per annum inclusive of London Weighting
Key Responsibilities
* Work closely with the Faculty Director for English & Maths, and Adult Skills to drive strategic growth, operational development and continuous improvement of the department.
* Develop a curriculum offer that meets local needs, aligns with the College vision, and collaborates with external partners.
* Lead the delivery of the Service’s annual quality cycle, including teaching observation, training and standardisation, performance monitoring, internal and external audits, OFSTED readiness and other quality functions.
* Promote excellent practice in teaching, learning and assessment, and lead on teacher development across the service.
* Ensure curriculum leaders comply with quality assurance processes and foster a performance‑management culture throughout the service.
* Drive positive cultural change, embodying and promoting the college values and behaviours, and empowering staff to reach their full potential.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
* Experience managing in Adult or Further Education, with a track record of leading change that yielded performance improvements.
* Strong knowledge of frameworks and external requirements, including Ofsted and awarding bodies.
* Ability to plan provision to meet local and external needs.
* Demonstrated experience in performance management of individuals and teams.
* Strong analytical skills, capable of interpreting quantitative and qualitative data and influencing policy.
* Effective teamwork and partnership building.

* Managing in either the Adult Education or Further Education sector.
* Working to frameworks and external requirements, including Ofsted and awarding bodies.
* Planning provision to meet local and external needs.
