Job overview

Applications are invited for a Fixed Term Contract for 12 months, full-time (10PAs) Consultant Medical Microbiologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. A working week of 9.25PAs could be considered, if an applicant was looking to work less than full time, this is based on current service requirements. The role will incorporate being part of a team delivering a comprehensive clinical Microbiology service, including laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, clinical and antibiotic advice, patient consults, ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs).

A dedicated part of this post will be for Infection Control Doctor provision within NUH, shared with other Consultant colleagues in the Department, working alongside the Microbiology team, Microbiology laboratory team, the hospital or community Infection Prevention and Control teams (IPCT) and Director of Infection Prevention and Control. There will also be a requirement to lead a Speciality MDT. This post will support the provision of a high quality infection management service in Nottingham. The Microbiology Laboratory is based at the Queens Medical Centre (QMC) Campus, however clinical duties will be required at both QMC and the City Hospital Campus. The Microbiology Laboratory at QMC serves both NUH campuses, as well as community healthcare services such as the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and the Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System with a total population of ~640,000.


Main duties of the job

A large number of clinical specialties are provided in Nottingham and the Microbiology service is actively involved in the clinical management of Microbiological and Virological infections with regular ward rounds and liaison with specialist units. The Department works closely with Infection Control and supports Antimicrobial Stewardship within the Trust and community. The laboratory works closely with the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham and there will be opportunities to develop research interests.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the provision of a comprehensive clinical Microbiology service, including laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, clinical and antibiotic advice, patient consults, ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs), antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, clinical governance, teaching and training and research and includes an on-call component.

Applicants will be required to have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).


Working for our organisation

The Microbiology laboratory is a large NHS laboratory serving both NUH campuses, as well as Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and Clinical Commissioning Groups with a total population of ~640,000. The current service workload based on recent activity data is approximately 918,000 with 604,000 bacteriology and 314,000 virology/serology work types a year, two thirds of which is acute hospital diagnostic work and the remaining one third of the work is for general practitioners.

The department is actively involved in the clinical management of microbiological and virological infection with regular ward rounds and liaison with the specialist units, works closely with colleagues in Infectious Diseases and supports antimicrobial stewardship within the trust and community.

A large number of specialties requiring clinical microbiological support are provided in Nottingham including General Medicine, General Surgery, Elderly Care, Critical Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics (including a PICU and two large neonatal units), Clinical Haematology (including bone marrow transplantation), Oncology, Cystic Fibrosis, Renal Dialysis, Renal Transplantation, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases & Genito-Urinary Medicine (both providing HIV services), Paediatric and Adult Neurosurgery, Spinal Surgery, Regional Trauma Centre, Orthopaedics, Burns, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and Cardiac Intensive Care.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee, in collaboration with the other consultants and senior scientists, will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed Job Plan:

* To provide a comprehensive clinical and liaison Microbiology service to the following:
* Clinicians at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
* Named specialties by agreement within the service, for example provision of Microbiology input to MDTs as appropriate.
* General Practitioners and other healthcare providers in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System
* To provide Infection Control doctor duties for the acute Trust or primary care. This includes the involvement in investigations of outbreaks of infectious disease and liaison with the UK Health Security Agency where appropriate.
* To be involved in the training of Specialty resident doctors (including educational and clinical supervisor roles where required), Trust Grade doctors, and scientific staff.
* To contribute, as required, to the teaching of Microbiology to undergraduates within the School of Life Sciences University of Nottingham and teaching for junior and senior medical colleagues within specialties across the trust.
* To take part in Audit and Quality Improvement within the department, supporting other specialties with this as appropriate.
* To maintain a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent scheme) and to participate in the annual Consultant appraisal and revalidation processes.
* To contribute to Clinical Governance to meet the requirements of the clinical service and to maintain UKAS accreditation.
* To liaise with the UK Health Security Agency in the provision of clinical and epidemiological data to support public health provision.
* To participate in the development of new Microbiological and molecular diagnostic techniques to meet the increasing demands of clinical users.
* To participate as appropriate in day-to-day Infection Prevention and Control activities and antimicrobial stewardship activities for the acute NHS and the Greater Nottingham health community. The designation of the Infection Control doctors for the acute trust and primary care, Antimicrobial Stewardship lead Consultant, Clinical Laboratory Leads, Training Programme Director and Clinical Governance lead is by mutual agreement between the Head of Service and the other consultant Microbiologists and is reviewed every 3 years or earlier if required.
* Share in the administrative duties associated with the running of the clinical service.

Training & Qualifications

* Full GMC registration Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register or CCT in Microbiology (or expected within 6 months of interview date)
* Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
* Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* Evidence of continuing professional development (existing consultants must be able to demonstrate active participation in a recognised CPD scheme)
* MRCP or evidence of equivalent training and experience
* FRCPath in Medical Microbiology by examination or evidence of equivalent training and experience.
* Higher qualification e.g. MSc / MD / PhD
* Health Care Infection Society Foundation Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control or equivalent
* Fellowship in IPC


Clinical Skills/Experience

* Evidenced technical and clinical skills as described in the job description.
* Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals.
* Experience of working within antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, or similar multi-disciplinary infection teams
* Demonstrates good written and verbal communication skills
* Specific training in communication skills
* Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
* xperience in delivering highquality presentations / written work
* Oral or poster presentations at IPC conferences (ESCMID, FIS/HIS or equivalent)

* Specific training in clinical or educational supervision
* Specific training in quality improvement or clinical audit
* Specific training in medical education and/or higher degree in medical education (e.g. PGCert, MSc)

* Ability to travel between City Hospital Campus and Queen’s Medical Centre Campus
