Role: Social Worker – Child Protection Team
Department: Children’s Social Care, Middlesbrough Council
Location: Middlesbrough
Purpose of Role
* To safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people at risk of significant harm.
* To undertake statutory child protection investigations and assessments in line with legislation and council procedures.
* To ensure timely, effective interventions that protect children and support families.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out child protection enquiries under Section 47 of the Children Act 1989.
* Undertake assessments of children and families, identifying risks and protective factors.
* Develop and implement child protection plans in partnership with families and multi-agency professionals.
* Prepare clear, evidence-based reports for child protection conferences, court proceedings, and statutory reviews.
* Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with council policies and safeguarding standards.
* Work collaboratively with police, health, education, and voluntary sector partners to safeguard children.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Qualified Social Worker with registration to Social Work England.
* Strong knowledge of child protection legislation, statutory guidance, and safeguarding procedures.
* Experience of working in child protection or statutory social work settings.
* Ability to manage complex caseloads and make sound professional judgments under pressure.
* Excellent communication, report writing, and relationship-building skills.
Desirable
* Experience of court work and giving evidence in child protection proceedings.
* Knowledge of Middlesbrough’s local services and family support pathways.
