As a uniformed patrol officer, you will carry out enforcement in relation to environmental offences including fly tipping, littering and dog fouling across the borough. You will also perform street‑level engagement and education relating to environmental issues and be the first point of contact for local communities and businesses. You will be required to work 37 hours per week across five days, including occasional weekends and evenings.
Responsibilities
* Provide a high‑visibility uniformed presence and carry out targeted patrol across the borough, either on foot or in a vehicle, ensuring a smart and professional appearance.
* Serve as the first point of contact for residents, businesses, visitors and customers at street level, advising on environmental issues and signposting to other departments and agencies.
* Proactively carry out street‑scene surveys, independently and with colleagues, to identify and address environmental issues early.
* Lead proactive and reactive environmental crime prevention by creating signage, distributing leaflets and engaging face‑to‑face.
* Engage in project work aimed at reducing environmental offending by providing targeted engagement opportunities.
* Respond to reports of environmental crime, conduct initial investigations, interview witnesses, search waste for evidence and seek evidential opportunities such as CCTV and ANPR.
* Conduct investigations and interview suspected offenders following the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and Environment Act 1995.
* Gather and record evidence, maintain accurate analog and digital records using pocket notebooks and body‑worn cameras.
* Provide witness evidence for court cases, attend criminal court trials, and give verbal evidence when required.
* Enforce environmental and dog‑fouling offences, issuing Fixed Penalty Notices, Community Protection Warnings and Notices.
* Lead local authority response to abandoned vehicles, following correct identification and removal procedures and maintaining records.
* Attend briefings and meetings with internal and external teams to ensure effective partnership working; support teams such as Community Safety, Housing, Waste Management and others.
* Participate in multi‑agency enforcement activities.
General Duties
Carry out other duties as may be required, commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility, directed by management.
Participate as required in the Council’s Emergency Planning Operations, which may involve duties outside the normal job description and contracted hours. In the event of an incident that disrupts the Council’s ability to deliver critical functions, the post holder will participate in the recovery stage, potentially undertaking duties in other departments or locations.
