Job Summary
We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Specialty Doctor to join our friendly and enthusiastic Orthopaedic team. The role focuses on front‑of‑house trauma and elective surgical experience, with a strong emphasis on career development and professional support within a forward‑thinking surgical department. The post is suitable for individuals wishing to gain experience in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery prior to FRCS (Orth)/Article 14 application, or those seeking middle‑grade experience before applying for a National Training Number. The successful candidate will rotate every six months through subspecialties including arthroplasty, knee, foot & ankle, hand, paediatric surgery and shoulder/elbow surgery, and will undertake general trauma on a 1‑in‑9 basis with further specialist trauma sessions within each subspecialty.
Job Responsibilities
The post holder will be based at Darlington Memorial Hospital (DMH) and will provide a comprehensive Orthopaedic Service to the people of County Durham. Responsibilities include managing patients on the ward, assisting senior members in the operating theatre, initial assessment of trauma cases, reporting to the on‑call registrar, and assisting in face‑to‑face trauma clinics. There will be opportunities to carry out trauma operations under supervision. The role involves normal day shifts, late shifts, weekends and night on‑call duties (including 8 pm‑8 am overnight on‑call once every three weeks, and alternating weekend/weekday patterns as outlined), and requires flexibility to deputise for colleagues in absence of annual leave, study leave or sickness. The holder will also participate in morning trauma meetings, postgraduate teaching, CPD, work‑based assessment, ARCP, clinical audit, and clinical governance activities.
Working Pattern
Weekday shifts are either 8 am‑6 pm or 1 pm‑8 pm, varying weekly. Overnight on‑call 8 pm‑8 am occurs once every three weeks (weekday), once every 36 weeks on Friday or Saturday/Sunday, and daytime on‑call on weekends once every six weeks.
Person Specification – Essential Skills & Knowledge
* Completed CT2 training or two years of orthopaedic experience
* Able to undertake minor and intermediate surgery under supervision
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of orthopaedic trauma management and common pathology
* Able to manage own time and communicate effectively at all levels
* Evidence of previous involvement in clinical audit and teaching junior staff

* Proven teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills
* Good discipline and motivation
* Ability to meet all travel requirements of this role and fluent in English
Experience – Essential
* Relevant experience within the NHS

* Ability to work on call

* Registration with the GMC
Qualifications – Essential
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCS or equivalent
