Job Title: Visitor Experience Assistant

Pay rate: £16.05 per hour PAYE
Role length: Anticipated 3 months
Working arrangements: 28 hours per week on a rota basis (4 days out of 7, including weekends)
The role
We are looking for a Visitor Experience Assistant who will be responsible for providing an excellent and safe visitor experience across two museums. You will support the safety and security of the museums and their contents, provide frontline information and assistance to visitors, support online shop and ticketing systems, retail presentation and stock control, and support the activities and staff of the wider museums team.
Key responsibilities
* Deliver a professional, welcoming, and high standard of customer service to all museum visitors
* Open and close museum buildings safely in line with operational procedures
* Maintain safe, clean, and presentable public spaces throughout the day
* Support visitor access needs and ensure smooth visitor flow during daily operations and events
* Respond to visitor queries in person, via email, and through the ticketing system
* Collaborate with café staff to ensure a seamless visitor experience
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of museum collections, exhibitions, and the local area to assist and engage visitors
* Assist with emergency procedures and ensure safe evacuation when required
* Promote and process Friends memberships and other fundraising initiatives
* Operate tills and card machines accurately; manage all cash handling and end-of-day procedures
* Maintain and replenish retail displays and manage shop stock, including receiving deliveries and conducting stocktakes
* Support the online shop with order fulfilment and customer communications
* Monitor building facilities daily, reporting issues and liaising with contractors as needed
* Assist with setting up spaces for meetings, events, and private hires
* Carry out light conservation cleaning and ensure the security and care of public areas and collections
What the client is looking for
* Experience of working within a Museum, Gallery or similar public facing environment
* Demonstrable understanding of Visitor Service standards and experience in delivering an excellent visitor experience
* Good communication skills, in person and in writing to respond to visitor queries onsite and online
* Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a wide range of people and as part of a varied and diverse team
* Good entry level IT skills including experience of using the Microsoft Office suite including Outlook and Teams
* Good organisational skills and attention to detail
* Ability to acquire an excellent working knowledge of the museum contents, procedures and key departmental contacts
* Knowledge of safe manual handling procedures and ability to lift and carry shop stock and assist in event set-ups
* Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety procedures
* Demonstrable experience of using EPOS systems, cash handling and cashing up procedures
* Demonstrable experience of administering an online shop platform to fulfil customer orders (e.g. Shopify or similar)
* Demonstrable experience of administering an online ticketing system including sale of tickets and loading events
* Demonstrable experience of working in a target-driven retail environment, including understanding of KPIs and use of stock management systems
