Animal Technician
We are seeking a dedicated Animal Technician to join a production team responsible for maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, and hygiene within a regulated facility. The role involves daily husbandry, health monitoring, and the implementation of standard operating procedures in accordance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and Home Office Codes of Practice.
Key Responsibilities:
* Carry out daily animal husbandry, including feeding, watering, cage cleaning, and environmental checks
* Maintain accurate records, including stock counts, production data, and daily observations
* Ensure all animal welfare standards are met, promptly reporting any concerns to senior staff
* Maintain strict biosecurity protocols when entering and exiting animal units
* Clean and sanitise animal rooms, equipment, and associated areas in accordance with SOPs
* Identify and label cages accurately, ensuring full traceability
* Assist with breeding programmes, including the selection and maintenance of breeding stock
* Support the training of new team members and contribute to a positive team culture
* Undertake other duties as required by the Team Leader or management team
Skills and Experience:
* Minimum of 12 months’ relevant experience in animal husbandry or laboratory animal care
* Minimum Level 2 Diploma in Animal Management (or equivalent qualification).
* GCSEs (A–C / 4–9) in English, Mathematics, and Science
* Ability to gain or hold a Home Office Personal Licence
* IT literacy (Word, Excel, and database systems)
Additional Information:
* Weekend and bank holiday work may be required as part of a rota
* Some overtime and out-of-hours cover may be necessary depending on business needs
* Full PPE must be worn in line with facility protocols
* A valid driving licence is required due to site location
Training and Development:
* Mandatory training includes Biosecurity, Fire Safety, Manual Handling, and 3Rs Awareness
* Opportunities for progression to Deputy Team Leader positions are available following the completion of further qualifications, such as IAT Level 3 and relevant licensing
