Band 6 Occupational Therapist – Acute Medicine
Location: Leicester Royal Infirmary / Leicester General Hospital (cross site)
Position: Permanent – 37.5 hours per week – flexible working available.
Responsibilities
* Be responsible for managing a complex clinical caseload from assessment to discharge/transfer of care within defined protocols, to facilitate a timely and safe discharge from hospital.
* Provide appropriate education to patients and carers to encourage patient participation in managing their condition, either individually or in groups.
* Liaise with and involve patients' carers in treatment as appropriate.
* Evaluate and process referrals from designated wards to ensure patients receive appropriate Occupational Therapy intervention.
* Set outcome‑related goals with patients that are consistent with departmental standards to meet their needs.
* Use specialist techniques for handling patients with physical deficits, often within confined spaces.
* Plan, deliver and progress treatment interventions using clinical reasoning and decision‑making skills to achieve identified patient goals.
* In the absence of the Clinical Specialist, accept delegated responsibility for managing the Acute Medicine OT caseload and ensure high standards of intervention in accordance with the College of OT Code of Professional Conduct.
* Apply knowledge of the OT process to deliver suitable treatment interventions and facilitate appropriate clinical decisions.
* Work closely with a large multidisciplinary team (MDT) to enable early rehabilitation and timely discharges.
* Support and supervise other staff and provide practice placements for students.
Qualifications
* Band 6 occupational therapist with a wide range of rotational experience, especially with older adults and comorbidities such as Parkinson's, falls, and fractures.
* Excellent communication, prioritisation, and time‑management skills.
* Experience supervising and providing placement experience to students is an asset.
* Commitment to flexible working across 7 days a week.
The successful candidate will join a supportive team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists on the Acute Medicine Team, receive regular supervision, appraisal and be encouraged to be involved in service development, audit and research.
