Applications are invited for a Consultant Haematologist with interest in Lymphoma based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff.

The Haematological Cancer Service at UHW is the largest in Wales and one of the busiest in the UK. It provides a secondary Haematology service to the population of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan (around 500,000 people) and the regional service to the population of South & West Wales. It is the only level 4 Haematology unit in Wales. The clinical Haematology service is supported by highly sophisticated diagnostics within the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine.

All Consultants are expected to participate in and to lead clinical studies. Preference is given to portfolio badged studies, but commercial studies are also encouraged. The successful candidate will be given opportunity to develop a research portfolio, in clinical studies or in laboratory science, if appropriate, in collaboration with the academic unit in Cardiff University.

Although this post is full‑time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.


Main duties of the job

The Lymphoma service consists of 4 Consultant Haematologists, 2 Clinical Nurse Specialists and a dedicated pharmacist to provide a secondary care service to patients with lymphoid malignancies. This service covers a large outpatient practice, day unit chemotherapy treatments in 2 hospital sites, an ambulatory care service and an in‑patient service on ward B4 Haematology and the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit.

The lymphoma team also provide many complex tertiary services for South Wales including the teenage and young (TYA) adult cancer service, the acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) service, a service for patients with central nervous system lymphomas and complex aggressive lymphomas, as well as providing support to the JCC commissioned CAR‑T cellular therapies service for lymphoid malignancies. The lymphoma team also run a portfolio of phase I, II and III clinical trials for patients with lymphoid malignancies from across South Wales.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within 6 months of expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum.

Qualifications

* On GMC Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT due within 6 months of interview date (note that Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)
* FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification


Experience

* Broad training and experience in clinical haematology and the management of patients with lymphoma


Skills

* Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
* Effective and demonstrable communication skills


Clinical Governance

* Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
* Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)


Research

* Evidence of active research interests


Teaching

* Evidence of teaching medical students and resident doctors


Management

* Evidence of effective leadership skills
