An Introduction to the Division/Specialty from Dr Richard Gorman
The Emergency Medicine Service is delivered on two sites within the Trust with the Pinderfields hospital site designated as a Major Trauma Unit, Dewsbury is a local ED and Pontefract was one of the first Urgent Treatment Centres in England. Our multi-disciplinary team of dedicated and committed professionals provide high quality care and treatment in what is, when combined across the three hospitals, consistently ranked as one of the top ten busiest Urgent and Emergency Medicine services in England handling in excess of 270,000 attendances each year.
Main duties of the job
* Provision of care with responsibility for the management of patients presenting to the ED including appropriate discharge / admission planning.
* In conjunction with senior colleagues to provide a full role in the provision of an out of hours emergency service. Although post holders may not have the initial competencies to manage independently it is expected that during the placement they will develop to take on this role.
* Referral of patients to other specialities as appropriate.
* Involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multi-disciplinary teams and meetings.
* Involvement in relevant administration duties.
* Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate.
* Active involvement in audit and clinical governance including service improvement activities.

Job responsibilities
This post is offered on a full-time 10 Programmed Activity basis, including 9 Direct Clinical Care Programmed Activities (DCC PA) and 1 core Supporting Professional Activities Programmed Activities (SPA PA). Additional DCC and SPA PAs are negotiable pending discussion.
Duties will be based primarily at our 2 Emergency Departments at Wakefield (Pinderfields) and Dewsbury. We also run an Urgent Treatment Centre at Pontefract. All medical staff may be required to deliver care across all 3 sites.
This role involves participating in the cross-site Tier 2 rota, supporting 24-hour Emergency Medicine coverage. The 9 DCC PA will work across various shifts, including days, twilights, and nights.
Main duties include:
* Managing patients presenting to the ED, including discharge/admission planning.
* Providing out-of-hours emergency services with senior colleagues; development to manage independently is expected during placement.
* Referring patients to other specialties as appropriate.
* Participating in multidisciplinary teams and meetings.
* Performing relevant administrative duties.
* Teaching and supervising junior staff and clinicians.
* Engaging in audit and clinical governance activities.
The CESR 1 schedule reflects the Tier 2 rota pattern, equivalent to a 12 PA job plan. The CESR 2 schedule supports colleagues in meeting CESR competencies.
Person Specification
GMC Registration
* Full GMC registration with license to practice. Please state your GMC number.
Experience
* Minimum of 4 years postgraduate training (full-time or equivalent part-time), with at least 2 years in Emergency Medicine or as a fixed-term specialty doctor in EM, or equivalent experience and competencies.
* Proficiency in general medical procedures/skills required of ED middle grade.
* Willingness to supervise and teach junior doctors, nurses, medical students, and pre-hospital colleagues.
Qualifications
* Medical Degree from a recognized medical school.
* Higher qualification such as MRCEM or FRCEM primary.
* Evidence of life support courses (ALS, ATLS, APLS, EPLS).
* Completion of relevant short training courses in EM (e.g., airway management, ultrasound).
Desirable Qualifications
* Instructor status on life support courses.
* Level 1 EMU/S certification.
Management Skills
* Analytical problem-solving skills.
* Good time management.
* Organizational skills (desirable).
