Milk Education is recruiting for a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join a specialist Autism school in Amersham, supporting children aged 4–16 with a range of autism and neurodivergent conditions. This role is ideal for aspiring Occupational Therapists, offering a rare opportunity to work with pupils who use Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) methods such as PECS, Makaton, and visual communication boards.
Why Occupational Therapy or Art Therapy?
For many autistic children, love and attainment need no words—expression happens through creativity, movement, and sensory engagement. This role allows you to explore how creativity supports emotional regulation, communication, and social interaction, particularly for non-verbal and minimally verbal students.
The Role:
6. Supporting children with a range of autism profiles, from low to high support needs.
7. Assisting with PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Makaton, and other AAC methods.
8. Helping children express emotions and regulate behaviour through art, music, and sensory activities.
9. Observing and supporting structured interventions led by Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Art Therapists.
10. Encouraging self-expression and engagement through tailored, creative activities.
11. Assisting with personal care routines, where required, to support pupils’ holistic development.
Who We’re Looking For:
12. Graduates in Art, Psychology, Creative Therapies, or related fields.
13. Individuals with a genuine interest in Occupational Therapy, Art Therapy, SEN support, or Neurodiversity.
14. Patient, compassionate, and adaptable team players who value non-verbal communication.
15. Those committed to building trust and consistency with pupils over the academic year.
Why This Role?
16. Gain first-hand experience in Autism support, AAC methods, and therapeutic approaches.
17. Work in a creative, nurturing environment where every child’s voice is valued.
18. Develop practical skills in PECS, Makaton, and sensory regulation strategies.
19. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of therapists and SEN specialists.
20. Build a strong foundation for further study or a career in Occupational Therapy, Art Therapy, or related fields.
21. Potential for a permanent position based on performance and school fit.
