Role description
As a Senior Ecologist, you will join a team of over 50 experienced ecologists who conduct ecological surveys and assessments, provide advice on soil, land use, hydrology, sustainable drainage, arboriculture, ecosystem services, natural capital assessment, biodiversity strategies, and cultural heritage. Over more than 30 years, the team has delivered over 2,000 projects across the UK, Europe and beyond, for public and private clients.
In this role, you will work on a variety of large and complex projects such as Urban and Greenfield Residential Development, Highway and Rail Schemes, Power Stations, Electrical and Gas Infrastructure, and more. You will support clients like EDF Energy, National Grid, the Environment Agency, Transport for London, Highways England, Network Rail, the Canal and River Trust, and private housing associations.
With your environmental management expertise, you will be engaged in work that may involve protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality or noise. Your projects will span some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations.
Role accountabilities
You will focus on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) within the Environmental team. Reporting to the Team Leader, you will:
* Coordinate and complete assigned tasks and projects within the Business Unit or project team.
* Lead and manage small projects to meet time, budgetary, and SHEQ targets.
* Ensure ecological aspects of the client relationship exceed expectations.
* Provide technical advice and leadership on small to medium sized projects.
* Support personal development and mentorship opportunities led by industry-recognised Technical Leaders.
Qualifications & Experience
* Knowledge and proven experience working within Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) projects
* Proven commercial and project management skills for small to medium projects
* Knowledge of ecological principles, relevant environmental and EcIA legislation, policy and guidance
* In‑depth knowledge of particular plant or animal groups and appropriate field survey skills
* Experience categorising and assessing habitats from the plant communities present
* Excellent reporting skills, with a proven track record in writing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements
* Basic experience in writing or assisting with project and/or plan‑level Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)
* Experience of bid production and client interaction
* Ability to lead surveys and manage small survey teams
