Job Description
The Cost Estimator supports UK & German sales by developing and delivering accurate costing for complex, high-value, multi-year service contracts, bids, and renewals. Fluency in both German and English is essential.
The role is part of a global costing and commercial team that advises on deal structures, resource requirements, and contributes to improving costing, pricing, and contract design across regions and products.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Agree outcomes and deliverables with internal stakeholders.
2. Review tender documents, statements of work, specifications, and deal strategies; develop and validate the scope of work for services. Use knowledge and data to assist bid teams and sales colleagues.
3. Gather data from various departments to build deal costing.
4. Create costing and pricing models using standard tools or develop bespoke models; coach others as needed.
5. Provide timely and accurate costing and pricing inputs for business cases.
6. Brief service delivery teams on costing for won business.
7. Communicate status and activities to stakeholders.
8. Create standardized methodologies for costing and pricing.
9. Present outputs clearly to support decision-making and bidding.
10. Assess and report on risk and variance in cost and price models.
11. Offer pricing recommendations when requested.
12. Advise on contractual terms related to costing and pricing.
13. Review contract data and compare current, historic, and proposed deals.
14. Monitor actual service costs, analyze variances, and improve processes based on findings.
15. Support resource planning through staffing cost modeling.
16. Identify improvements to costing and pricing processes.
Qualifications
Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Graduate qualification in finance, business, engineering, or a numerate subject.
* Fluent in German and English.
Experience:
* Developing financial models for high-value bids and tenders.
* Recognized as the go-to person for costing and pricing.
* Identifying opportunities and risks.
* Bidding, tender review, and interpretation experience.
* Operational and financial data analysis experience.
Knowledge/Skills:
* Financial modeling of long-term contracts for complex assets/equipment maintenance.
* Understanding of how costing/pricing relates to contractual terms.
* Strong IT skills, including SAP and advanced MS Excel.
* Knowledge of Smiths Detection products.
* Experience with modeling tools.
* Excellent communication skills in English and French.
