Job Description

Position Details

Birmingham Medical School, School of Medical Sciences, College of Medicine and Health

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £49,909 to £61,825

Clinical

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to August 2027

2 positions available

Closing date: 14th July 2025

Background

The introduction of the UK Medical Licensing Assessment in 2024/25 means that Birmingham Medical School needs to adopt a 2-stage change process to ensure our students are given the appropriate resources to have the opportunity to excel. The clinical years (years 3-5 of the 5-year course and years 2-4 of the GEC course) are in a process of change to enable learning to be reorganised, condensed and updated so that students can sit the applied knowledge test 4 months earlier than the current programme.

The Clinical Teaching Fellows will teach and contribute to the assessment of undergraduate medicine students supervised by senior members of staff who have ultimate responsibility.

Clinical Teaching Fellows are required to:

* Support subject leads in ensuring content and assessment are appropriate
* Facilitate small group teaching to augment a reduced clinical placement programme

Role Summary

The main focus of this role is to provide supporting clinical input to the undergraduate medical programme.

Clinical Teaching Fellows will be required to work with academic and clinical staff to:

* Support subject leads in ensuring content is appropriate
* Facilitate small group teaching to augment a reduced clinical placement programme
* Contribute to low stakes assessment and formative feedback
* Contribute to summative assessments

The post-holder will be expected to undertake a Postgraduate Certification in Education for Health Professionals run at the University, if not previously obtained.

There will also be the opportunity for the post-holder to undertake a project (with an academic supervisor) from a list of options available for the current academic year.

This role does not have any line management responsibility.

This role is not directly linked to income generation.

The post-holder’s reporting line is to the Clinical Deputy Programme Director for MB ChB. There are no roles reporting to the post-holder.

Main Duties

Under guidance from the academic supervisors who have the ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the module or teaching programme:

* Contribute to the design of modules with other colleagues including the development of on-line and face to face learning materials.
* Teach courses across the undergraduate medical curriculum, predominantly through lectures and small group teaching, so that the programme’s teaching objectives are met.
* Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme.
* Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining. (Summative assessment, including assessed work contributing to the final award – as a mark or as a credit – such as unseen examinations, essays, dissertations or presentations, is subject to validation by the academic supervisor).
* Contribute, under supervision, to assessments including writing examination questions, organising pilots of new questions, taking part in standard setting.
* Contribute to the development and delivery of faculty development training sessions for clinical and non-clinical staff contributing to the MB ChB programme.
* Undertake administration arising from teaching.
* Undertake personal professional development in medical education, including self reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes and scholarship activities.
* Contribute to public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader.
* Promote equality and diversity values, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
