Flood Risk Engineer Epping, Essex Full-Time, Temporary 37 Hours per Week 3 Months Contract* £40-£45 per hour, Umbrella Closing Date: Monday 13th October 2025 Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be supporting Epping Forest District Council in recruiting a Flood Risk Engineer on an initial 3 month contract, with view to extend. Role Purpose * To be the technical specialist and able to deliver Council services across flood risk analysis including reviewing flood risk assessments, SuDS designs, responding to planning applications as well as contributing when required to the management of the council’s flood storage assets. * To constructively challenge consultants and developers to design effective drainage systems that comply with local and national planning policy and legislation. * To be a knowledgeable expert in SuDS systems and able to monitor and assess new and existing drainage systems across a range of developments including new large residential sites. * Ensure the Council meets its statutory obligations and that the highest standards of probity and good conduct are maintained at all times. * Take collective responsibility for ensuring excellent services are provided to our residents. Key Accountabilities * Be a member of the Environmental Protection and Drainage Team and be responsible for contributing to technical delivery of: Flood Risk Management, land drainage and reviewing SuDS systems. To be knowledgeable and engaged in reducing flood risk and challenging inappropriate drainage systems through planning applications to protect the district and property form future flooding events. * To be practical and willing to undertake work that may be required such as lifting manholes, inspecting drainage systems or flood risk assets. Working as part of a wider team that is willing to cross-train and help other members as required. * To be confident and responsible to make routine decisions regarding site visits, inspections and public enquiries. * To have a varied knowledge of flooding and drainage systems in both rural and urban settings. * Duties and responsibilities should be regarded as neither exclusive nor exhaustive as the post holder may be required to undertake other reasonably determined duties and responsibilities, commensurate with the grading of the post, without changing the general character of the post. Skills, Knowledge & Experience * Relevant professional degree/qualification or demonstrable equivalent work experience in flood risk engineering, drainage or environmental protection. * Demonstrate a good understanding of safeguarding issues commensurate with the role. * Previous experience in an organisation of comparable scale and complexity. * A demonstrable track record of providing an efficient, effective, confidential and professional flood risk assessment service * Proven IT skills, using MS Office, GIS mapping systems. * Knowledge of MicroDrainage / InfoDrainage would be an advantage * Extremely high attention to detail and diligent record keeping. * An understanding of Council financial and procurement processes. * A reasonable understanding of the current issues facing local government.
