Since 9 September 2024, all deaths that are not investigated by a Coroner will be reviewed by NHS Medical Examiners. This change is part of the Department of Health and Social Care’s death certification reforms.

The Salisbury Medical Examiner Service is looking to expand our team of Medical Examiner Officers (MEO) to support Medical Examiners in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death.

Medical Examiner Officers serve as a point of contact and provide advice for bereaved families, healthcare professionals, HM Coroner, and registration services.

(We are happy to discuss the option of a 12-month secondment.)

Main duties of the job

The Salisbury Medical Examiner Service requires a registered healthcare professional with current nursing or relevant clinical experience and a good understanding of medical terminology to work as a Medical Examiner Officer (MEO).

MEOs support Medical Examiners by reviewing patient records and gathering necessary information to establish the cause of death.

The post holder must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to communicate empathetically and professionally in emotional situations.

We are committed to providing outstanding care and have a reputation for high-quality services, including Burns, Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery, Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, and others. We support flexible working and consider requests based on service needs. Benefits include NHS discounts, at least 35 days of paid holiday (pro rata), a generous pension scheme, on-site car parking (fees apply), leisure centre, day nursery, and holiday play scheme.
