Protocol Education is working closely with a specialist provision in South Shields that supports children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We are seeking a dedicated and nurturing SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team and help students re-engage with learning in a safe, supportive environment. The Role: Providing 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs Building strong, trusting relationships with young people who may present with challenging behaviour Helping to regulate emotions and encourage positive choices through consistent, trauma-informed approaches Working closely with class teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals Supporting with academic work and personalised learning plans De-escalating situations calmly and safely, following the school’s behaviour policy and training You Will Need: Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behavioural difficulties, or in a PRU/alternative provision setting A calm, patient and empathetic approach Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to stay composed under pressure A passion for inclusive education and making a real difference Team Teach or other de-escalation training (desirable, but not essential) In Return, We Offer: A competitive daily rate of £89 - £108 Weekly pay through PAYE – no umbrella or hidden fees Access to specialist training including Team Teach, de-escalation and safeguarding Ongoing support from a dedicated SEND consultant who understands your role Opportunities for long-term placements and permanent roles Ready to take the next step in your SEMH support career?
