Overview

Due to the increased development of our oncoplastic surgical pathways, and to future proof the service, the Breast Care Unit at Torbay Hospital has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Doctor, interested in developing their breast clinical skills and menopause knowledge, to join the team for 5 sessions per week on a 12 month fixed term basis, with the possibility to become a permanent role. These sessions will be run from the Breast Care Unit at Torbay Hospital where we have on-site mammography, ultrasound and procedural rooms. The successful candidate will provide clinical assessment of our one-stop pathway patients to meet Urgent Suspected Cancer demands. Some of the work involves follow-up breast cancer patients and management of symptoms of menopause caused by hormonal treatment of breast cancer. The Breast Care Directorate sits within the Planned Care Delivery Unit at Torbay Hospital. This is a diagnostic outpatient service with surgical and non-surgical cancer treatment.

Approx 350 new breast cancer cases are treated per year. The unit operates with close working between radiology, surgery, breast care nursing staff, pathology and oncology.

The Breast Care Unit has 2 digital mammography rooms, 2 ultrasound rooms and a shared clinic/ultrasound room. Access to imaging is available for all urgent surgical referrals. Wire and Magseed localisation and image-guided biopsies are performed at the unit. MRI Breast is performed in selected cases. The unit has a suite of 5 surgical consulting rooms.

The Unit hosts the South Devon Breast Screening Programme. The screening service covers Teignbridge, South Hams and Torbay footprint for a population of 40,000 women aged 50 -70 years.

There is a weekly MDT meeting each Wednesday to allow regular weekly discussion on a prospective basis to aid communication and expedite further management. Family history screening is undertaken according to risk-based protocols. The unit is supported by the Clinical Genetics service in Exeter.

Reconstructive / Oncoplastic Surgery

The unit offers all commonly performed breast reconstruction and oncoplastic procedures. We can also support visits to the unit for further information prior to completing an application.
