UGI & General Consultant Surgeon

Consultant Surgeon - Upper GI & General Surgery

UCLH - GI Services Division

The successful candidate will be an experienced and collaborative Upper GI and General Surgeon committed to high-quality patient care and aligned with UCLH values of safety, kindness, teamwork and continuous improvement. They will contribute to specialist UGI cancer care, benign UGI pathways and general surgery activity, supporting the Trust's objectives to improve waiting times and deliver an excellent patient experience.

Knowledge, Training & Qualifications

Applicants must hold full GMC registration and be on (or within six months of entry to) the GMC Specialist Register in General Surgery. Strong understanding of NHS clinical governance, quality standards and safe service delivery is essential. JAG accreditation is required. Additional academic qualifications (MD/PhD) and evidence of research activity are desirable but not essential.

Experience

Candidates must have completed comprehensive training in UGI and General Surgery, demonstrating competence in the management of benign and cancer cases as well as general surgical emergencies. Experience in clinical audit, governance and undergraduate/postgraduate teaching is essential. Prior involvement in a UGI MDT or tertiary cancer setting, and experience showing leadership in teaching or service improvement, are advantageous.

Main duties of the job

Clinical & Technical Skills

The postholder must be independently proficient in open and laparoscopic UGI procedures and core general surgical operations, with the ability to manage emergency presentations confidently. Strong operative judgement, decision‑making skills and capability to work within a 1:5/6 tertiary on‑call rota are required. Experience in complex benign UGI surgery and advanced laparoscopic techniques is desirable but not mandatory.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate integrity, reliability and commitment to high clinical standards. They will actively participate in governance, audit, education, supervision of junior staff, sustainability responsibilities and service development. A strong commitment to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and safeguarding is essential. Willingness to engage with management, contribute to service improvement and support the research culture of UCLH is expected.

Person Specification


Knowledge and Qualifications

* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise
* Knowledge of Clinical Governance framework of NHS
* Understanding of current changes in the management and organisational structures of the NHS. Ability to work within these parameters.
* Knowledge and understanding of principles of resource and budgetary management.
* JAG accreditation
* Proven ability to carry out high quality original research leading to publication in peer reviewed MD/PhD


Experience

* Proven training in UGI and General Surgery
* Experience of and interest in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
* Experience of working within an UGI MDT setting
* Previous formal Teaching experience showing leadership skills


Skills and Abilities

* Proficient in advanced laparoscopic surgery.
* Fully trained in General Surgery and able to manage common general surgical and OG emergencies
* Proficient and independent in all UGI/General surgery procedures, both open and laparoscopic
* Proven ability to teach in clinical settings
* Surgical skills in complex UGI and benign surgery
* Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.


Communication

* Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English;
* Ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
* Ability to see patients as people, ability to empathise and work co‑operatively with others.

£109,725 to £145,478 a year per annum plus London weighting (on‑call Cat A 5%)
