Job Description
This role within the GM Motorsports Program involves developing performance metrics, conceptualizing innovative analysis methods, and implementing these techniques to enhance on-track performance. As a Senior Performance Engineer, you will focus on validating, refining, and applying new tools and methods to optimize vehicle setups for specific events and explore new directions for future vehicle development. Close collaboration with the Performance Engineering group and regular interaction with the broader GM Motorsports team and customer race teams are essential.
Responsibilities
1. Collaborate with GM supported teams, GM engineering groups, and GM personnel to identify analysis areas for maximum benefit.
2. Answer questions across all GM Motorsports groups, building collective knowledge.
3. Brainstorm innovative ways to achieve greater performance.
4. Train colleagues on models and analysis techniques.
5. Communicate findings and updates effectively through reports and meetings.
6. Improve analysis methods and vehicle dynamics understanding by reimagining solutions, prototyping, and validating ideas against track and test data.
7. Work with GM Software team to implement solutions in production tools.
8. Push the boundaries of current tools and techniques for better vehicle understanding and performance.
9. Collaborate with core engineering and race series groups for conceptual studies and development efforts.
10. Explore and implement advanced simulation and analysis tools to enhance on-track performance.
11. Present findings clearly and actionable.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
* 5+ years of experience in top-level motorsports series (e.g., NASCAR, IMSA, F1, IndyCar, WEC).
* Knowledge of simulation workflows, including offline and DIL simulator use.
* Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, C#.
* Experience analyzing on-track performance using vehicle dynamics principles and statistics.
* Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
* Willingness to relocate if applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
* Race engineering experience, including vehicle setup and race procedures.
* Proficiency with motorsports data analysis software (Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec).
* Experience with multibody modeling, tire modeling, aerodynamic testing, and CFD.
* Knowledge of vehicle testing methods and data reduction techniques.
