Surrey Downs Health & Care.

The successful applicant would be responsible for the operational management of the Elmbridge MSK service (primarily regarding Molesey Hospital) on a day-to-day basis.

Main duties of the job

1. Responsibility for the operational management of the Elmbridge MSK Physiotherapy Dept and day-to-day running of the service.
2. To assess, diagnose and treat own specialist caseload of complex musculoskeletal patients and maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner.
3. To supervise and teach less experienced physiotherapy staff and students within this specialty.
4. To feedback and receive guidance from a clinical specialist on a regular monthly basis with ad hoc support as necessary

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

To perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse and highly complex presentations; use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition. In addition triage assessments may be carried out face to face or over the telephone.

2.To formulate and deliver specialist individual or group physiotherapy treatment programme incorporating highly developed manual techniques based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options to include comprehensive discharge plans and self-management programmes.

3.To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively and sensitively condition related information with patients, doctors and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

4.To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals and gain valid informal consent to treatment.

5.To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes as required and to advise and support more junior colleagues to this effect.

6.To help co-ordinate and ensure effective delivery of physiotherapy services at Molesey, liaising and co-operating with colleagues across other sites to provide equitable services. Organising yourself and others effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.

7.To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload and in the department and advise more junior staff, seeking guidance from Clinical Specialist / Clinical Manager as appropriate.

8.Work within local trust policies and CSP clinical guidelines and to have a good working knowledge of national and local standards. Monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.

9.To make accurate and complete records of work undertaken and keep monthly statistics in line with CSP and physiotherapy department standards.

11.To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your own professional and clinical work.

12.To teach, assess and contribute to the performance assessment of Band 6 and Band 5 physiotherapists, physiotherapy technical instructors.

13.To make a significant contribution to the development of departmental policies and procedures on clinical care by attending appropriate meetings and recommending changes to clinical care or service provision.

Professional

1.To maintain own clinical professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of new developments and trends and incorporate them as necessary into your work and that of your team. Maintain own development plan in line with the Knowledge and Skills Framework.

2.To be an active member of the in-service training programme by attending and delivering presentations at training sessions, meetings and tutorials.

3.To act in an advisory capacity across the Trust in own area of specialist expertise.

4.To train, supervise, mentor and performance manage junior staff and students, including formal appraisals and relevant documentation.

5.To be responsible for teaching student physiotherapists to graduate level on physiotherapeutic skills and knowledge within core clinical areas.

6.To be responsible for devising, developing and teaching new training programmes for less experienced staff.

7.To undertake clinical audit within the physiotherapy department and make recommendations for change.

8.Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence-based practice in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

9.To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management within the work situation.

Organisational

1.To be responsible for the day to day running of Molesey Physiotherapy Department, including departmental tidiness, maintenance and administration, ensuring all queries and urgent referrals are dealt with.

2.To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties and to adhere to departmental polices and guidelines to ensure safe use of equipment by yourself and other staff. To report any defects or difficulties to the Clinical Manager.

3.Utilise IT systems appropriately to improve the efficiency of the service.

4.To assist in the supervision and co-ordination of junior staff and assistants on a daily basis ensuring their practice as well as your own meets the required professional standards.

5.To communicate with other professional and administrational staff working within Molesey Hospital, thereby assisting with the efficient and effective running of the clinic as a whole.

1.To ensure accurate and clear records are maintained by the team.

2.To keep up to date with relevant developments in administrative systems and processes and clinical services, and ensure that the team is also kept updated.

3.To work autonomously within departmental and SDH&C, seeking advice when necessary.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

9. HCPC registered Physiotherapist
10. Relevant Post-Graduate Training
11. Specialist knowledge and practical experience across a range of MSK Physiotherapy therapeutic techniques underpinned by theory and recognised courses

Desirable criteria

12. To have completed an extended course or working towards an MSc e.g. MACP
13. Member of CSP
14. Leadership training course completion

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

15. Experience working in a large healthcare organisation e.g. NHS
16. High level of musculoskeletal knowledge and clinical skills.
17. Comprehensive knowledge of Clinical Governance
18. Leadership Experience e.g. project or team leadership

Desirable criteria

19. Awareness of Learning types and different leadership styles
20. Awareness of wider service issues not specific to this post e.g. NHS landscape or within SDHC

Skills

Essential criteria

21. Excellent communication, motivational and leadership skills
