Summary
TheAthenaeumis a private members institution in Liverpool city centre, founded 1797 to ensure the up-to-date provision of newspapers and pamphlets, and to create a library for the use of the merchants and professional men of the city. This required subscribers to take shares in the 'Institution' and hence the names 'Proprietor' are used rather than 'club' and 'member'. E arly Proprietors of the club included "entrepreneurs, slavery-abolitionists, free-thinkers, and political radicals, who regarded themselves as the commercial and intellectual champions of Liverpool".
Today, it proudly continues to function as a private members institution, its Proprietors now include men and women with membership limited to 500people and has an unrivalled status among private clubs.
Role Overview The House Manager is the lead for all service operations for all the Athenaeums internal F&B service from the day-to-day operations to special member events. Setting and maintaining an exceptionally high standard of food quality customer service and presentation, that consistently exceeds the expectation of our members and visitors. Provide innovation and new product ideas, and promote sales opportunities for F&B, event and function sales. Working with the leadership team create and maintain the Athenaeum as a venue that attracts new members and customers as much for the F&B services as for the full benefits of membership. You will manage, motivate and inspire the service team to deliver a safe and efficient back of house operation.
Supporting a great member and visitor experience
You will lead for a culture of exceptional service every time for everyone within your team by role modelling service standards.
Ensure and maintain consistent standards of service and presentation within the F&B operation and review progress regularly against feedback to create enjoyable experiences.
You will identify and deal with problems constructively to drive a positive outcome.
An experienced background in a high-quality hospitality environment and great interpersonal skills and high levels of self-motivation and initiative are essential.
You will control the day-to-day running of the F&B service operation, with oversight of the housekeeping.
The role of House Manger presents a real opportunity for the right person to manage, promote and develop the Hospitality offering across the membership reporting to the Club Secretary, within a progressive and friendly environment.
Core Responsibilities
To oversee the hospitality experience delivered to members, guests and event clients within the Club, including:
Setting and maintaining service standards and procedures.
Line management of all service staff and housekeeping staff.
Promoting and supporting Catering and Bar activities.
Co-ordinating the overall delivery of all events, both internal and external.
Co-ordinating staff rotas to ensure suitable staff cover is always present.
Oversee the housekeeping team and liaising with the Office team to support the successful delivery of services and maintenance of the building.
The role will include profit and loss accountability and drive revenue enhancement for the hospitality offering.
Work with the Office team to ensure the smooth running of functions and manage the processes and procedures the club has in place for such activities.
Work closely with the Head Chef to promote catering options and actively market all Club functions.
Develop the Club's offering for Members and guests.
You will be an ambassador for the club's food and drink services, and a representative for the Club to members and guests, and a role model of best service for your team members.
Working safely
As House Manger you will be responsible for ensuring that all Health & Safety legislation is carried out correctly andrecorded as necessary, including all HACCP and COSHH responsibilities, fire evacuation procedure, First Aid at Work, always ensuring safe working practices at all times.
You will ensure that you and your team comply with relevant legislation and Athenaeum rules including Food Hygiene standards and Food Safety Management systems, ensuring that your team do the same, mitigating risks to members, staff and contractors. at all times.
Under your supervision you will ensure that all equipment is maintained in working order and kept clean, has clear operations instructions, is safe and secure with any issues reported at the first available opportunity, and that all staff are regularly retrained on the use of equipment.
You will keep records of any equipment maintenance required, and update the asset register as necessary.

You will assist in the recruitment of talented and enthusiastic people; develop, coach them, and by driving strong performance through setting clear objectives, enhance their skills and maintain motivation.
You will support the service team members to produce a high standard of customer service and increase their product knowledge.
Using effective methods of communication, you will operate in a fair manner that achieves results and delivers a service focused team.
Supporting the Athenaeum
You will maintain types of stock and products that support the Athenaeums place and purpose as an historic private members club.
You will be responsible for ensuring that all service team members proactively provide up to date and accurate information relating to all F&B products for Proprietors and guests highlighting menu changes, seasonality and creativity,
You will ensure that you and your team deliver 5-star service for all Club users, ensuring best practice processes and procedures are in place across the Club and that staff are appropriately trained.
Develop a culture of continual improvement within the Newsroom, Dining Room, at functions, events and throughout the service team. Continuously benchmark the competitive environment and identify great practice to introduce at the Athenaeum.

Be conversant with all aspects of the operation and be willing to cover and provide support as the need arise.
