ROLE OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Estimator to join our growing team. This pivotal role sits at the intersection of technical knowledge and commercial strategy, responsible for accurately costing and bidding for fire and security projects across the construction and built environment sectors. The successful candidate will play a key part in driving revenue growth by delivering compelling, competitive tenders and working closely with our sales and project delivery teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Estimating
* Prepare detailed, accurate cost estimates for fire alarm, CCTV, access control, intruder detection, and integrated high-technology security systems
* Analyse drawings, specifications, and site survey information to produce bill of quantities and take-offs
* Source and negotiate pricing with suppliers and subcontractors to optimise project margins
* Identify project risks, allowances, and exclusions, ensuring estimates reflect a thorough understanding of project scope
* Produce estimates across a range of project values, from small works through to large multi-site construction contracts
Tender Management & Bidding
* Manage the full tender process from receipt of enquiry through to submission, ensuring all deadlines are met
* Prepare professional, compelling bid documentation including method statements, preliminaries, and pricing schedules
* Review tender documents, contracts, and specifications to identify commercial risks and opportunities
* Attend pre-tender and post-tender meetings with clients and contractors as required
* Maintain a detailed tender register and track bid outcomes to continuously improve win rates
Sales & Estimating Co-ordination
* Work closely with the sales team to support business development activity and respond to client enquiries in a timely manner
* Liaise with project managers and engineers during the handover of won contracts to ensure estimates are accurately translated into project budgets
* Support the sales pipeline by providing indicative budgets and feasibility costings at early-stage enquiry
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of product pricing, labour rates, and market conditions
* Attend client and contractor meetings, site visits, and industry events to support business relationships
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
* Proven experience as an Estimator within the fire and security or building services sector
* Strong technical understanding of fire alarm systems, electronic security systems, and/or integrated high-technology solutions
* Experience of tendering for construction and M&E projects.
* Proficiency in estimating software.
* Excellent numerical and analytical skills with a high degree of accuracy
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tenders simultaneously under time pressure
* Commercial awareness and a thorough understanding of margin, risk, and value engineering
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
* Familiarity with BS 5839, BS EN 62676, PD 6662, and other relevant British Standards
* Experience with estimating software such as Trimble, ConEst, or similar platforms
* Experience working within a NSI Gold or SSAIB-accredited organisation
* Understanding of system design and the ability to create custom solutions for clients based on the latest technology available.
