Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the General Surgery Directorate for a Senior Medical Secretary to work as part of the General Surgery team. We are a strong, proactive team who welcome innovation and adaptability within the service. The position is full‑time and the successful applicant will be based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital; however, cross‑site cover may be necessary to Alexandra Hospital or Kidderminster Hospital. We also offer some flexibility with home working for a limited number of days per week.
Main Duties
* Provide medical secretarial service to Consultants and other medical staff in relation to their clinical duties.
* Manage Consultants’ waiting list and book theatre lists in line with Trust policy and national 18‑week RTT guidelines.
* Undertake medical audio/copy typing duties including outpatient letters to General Practitioners, operation notes, discharge summaries and other official correspondence.
* Respond to enquiries from GPs, other Health Service personnel, patients and relatives.
* Participate in the use of PAS systems to keep patient information accurate and produce required documentation.
* Handle all incoming correspondence, phone and email efficiently and effectively.
* Liaise with patients, relatives and staff, demonstrating sensitivity and maintaining professionalism at all times.
* Assist in providing cover for other secretaries to ensure continuity of service.
* Work using own initiative with minimal supervision, prioritising workload in line with department and consultant objectives.
* Assist in the introduction and use of IT and provide IT support to colleagues.
* Perform any other duties as required by the Consultant or Directorate Management Team.

Person Specification

Essential Experience
* Previous medical secretarial or hospital experience.
* Previous experience working in a busy office.
* Experience dealing with members of the public.
Desirable Experience
* Knowledge of NHS systems.
* Working knowledge of PAS / Bluespier / CLIP.
Personal Qualities and Skills
* Accurate and detail‑oriented.
* Can work under demanding conditions with high volume of activity.
* Willingness to collaborate with team members to develop office and communication systems.
* Good computer skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Essential Qualifications
* Typewriting/word‑processing RSA Level 2 or equivalent.
* GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above, or equivalent.

* AMSPAR qualification or working towards AMSPAR medical terminology qualification.
