Role Summary
An exciting opportunity for dynamic and innovative Maintenance Shift Technicians with an electrical or mechanical background to join University Hospitals of Leicester.
Responsibilities
Carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks to a high standard, ensuring efficient operation and maintenance of environmental engineering plant, equipment, and other engineering systems.
* Heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, various voltage systems, steam raising plant and associated equipment
* Medical gas systems, nurse call systems, fire detection, building services controls, standby generators, specialist healthcare equipment
Provide comprehensive healthcare engineering maintenance service to all wards and departments within a multidisciplinary environment, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.
Act with initiative, support the Estates Supervisor and Maintenance Managers in day‑to‑day service management, and assist in managing contractors.
Work a rotating shift pattern (4 on 4 off) and provide emergency out‑of‑hours on‑call duties.
Other tasks include:
* Perform risk assessments, supervise and organise estates work, allocate resources.
* Use the Trust Facilities Management System to allocate PPM and reactive work requests.
* Liaise with area users to organise shutdowns of critical and complex patient support systems.
* Communicate with wards and departments regarding estates issues, ensuring standards of service delivery.
* Interpret and work from instructions, drawings, and specifications in installations, plant, and equipment.
* Manufacture, design, assemble, erect, and install new work; troubleshoot technical issues and fault diagnostics.
* Observe statutory and other relevant requirements, Health & Safety, and codes of practice.
* Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance and day‑to‑day duties involving boilers, water testing, stripping down boilers, and electrical system maintenance including fire alarm systems, batteries and UPS.
* Record, update, audit estates records and compile plant histories.
* Carry out surveys for future maintenance, alterations or improvements; prepare and compile technical reports.
* Perform work of other estates trades (multi‑skilling) as appropriate.
* Use the PDA and building management system (BMS) with electronic devices for fault diagnosis and monitoring.
* Respond to switchboard and BMS alarms (fire alarms, lift trappings, medical gas alarms, boiler alarms).
* Control untrained personnel during lift emergencies and coordinate lift service engineers.
Key Working Relationships
* Members of Trust staff at all levels including nursing staff, Estates Supervisors, Estates Managers, All Estates and Facilities staff across disciplines, External Agencies, Emergency services.

* Carry out work in accordance with current legislation, codes of practice and best practice guidance.
* Work safely, observing Health & Safety Policies and procedures.
* Work efficiently within Service Level Agreements and Key Performance Indicators.
* Report failures and non‑conformities to line manager.
* Act professionally when in contact with patients, visitors, and staff.
* Maintain CAFM system records up to date.
Additional Responsibilities
* Participate in on‑call/shift rotas and be prepared for emergency hours.
* Respond to switchboard and building management system alarms, use BMS for first‑line fault diagnosis.
* Use electronic devices to monitor and analyse reports from complex BMS and security systems.
* Participate in regular team briefings, understand and adhere to Trust policies and procedures.
* Participate in the Trust Appraisal system and Personal Development planning.
* Complete all required paperwork, job dockets and timesheets.
Qualifications
Electrical or Mechanical background, with relevant skills and experience. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to adapt to dynamic work environments.
