* Two regional leads will be appointed, one for Cheshire and Mersey and one for Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
* The post holder will develop, manage, and deliver a comprehensive simulation programme for ophthalmology residents across all training years, aligned to the curriculum and regional training priorities. * The Programme Director will ensure that both national standards, determined by the Royal College, and guidelines and standards established within Ophthalmology are met. Postgraduate programme management including assessments, progression, rotations, support and remediation, OOP management, trainee management, careers support, less than full-time training, inter-deanery transfer, academic training and other related work-streams will be included.
* The ideal candidate will be an experienced NHS Consultant with a thorough understanding of Ophthalmology Simulation training across the region and strong leadership and communication skills to work effectively as a member of a multi-professional team.

Contract and progression

Due to NHS England's integration into the Department of Health and Social Care, the end date for all new educator appointments will be 31 March 2027. The successful applicant will be updated regarding potential extensions (not guaranteed) beyond this date.

Working arrangements

As a flexible employer, we will consider flexible working arrangements where possible. Although the advertised role may indicate a home office base, we remain committed to supporting flexibility around workplace locations where it works for the service.

Secondments

Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only; agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.

Our commitments to you

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace that values diversity. We welcome your talent and enthusiasm irrespective of age, disability, neuro-divergence, sex, gender identity and gender expression, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or other personal circumstances. We have policies to ensure fair and consistent treatment at every stage of the recruitment process, including reasonable adjustments for people with a disability or neuro-divergent.

Application process and notices

We welcome applications from disabled candidates. If you meet all the essential criteria, you will be guaranteed an interview. If applying on a secondment basis, obtain prior agreement from your current line manager. We do not accept applications via recruitment agencies and cannot offer visa sponsorship for any vacancies.

Security and data

To comply with GovS 007 and the Personnel Security Standards 2024, individuals employed or contracted by NHS England may be required to undergo Baseline Personnel Security Standards checks, dependent on the role. The NHS Business Services Authority handles your application; a privacy notice explains how personal data is processed. If you have applied via NHS Jobs, your application may be imported into our third-party recruitment system, with information transferred into the NHS Electronic Staff Records system if appointed.

Additional information

The ideal candidate will be an experienced NHS Consultant with a thorough understanding of specialty training across the region, strong leadership and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within a multi-professional team. Our work supports the NHS to deliver high-quality services for patients and best value for taxpayers. We lead the NHS in England by enabling local systems to improve health, creating a great place to work, ensuring the workforce has the right knowledge and skills, expanding digital technology and innovation, and delivering value for money. The government has announced a gradual merger of NHS England with the Department of Health and Social Care to create a more strategic centre.
