Semantic Modelling |Taxonomy | Ontology | AI‑Ready Data |
I’m representing a fast‑growing organisation operating at the intersection of data, sustainability, environmental insight, and AI. Their platforms bring together tens of thousands of real‑world data points from multiple regions and sectors, helping partners make better decisions, model complex systems, and build AI‑ready data capabilities.
As they expand internationally, the business needs a Lead Data Modeller to create the conceptual foundations that will allow their data, analytics, and AI systems to scale intelligently and consistently.
This is not a data engineering role. It’s for someone who wants to shape how data is understood.
The Role: Lead Data Modeller
As the Lead Data Modeller, you’ll own the conceptual, semantic, and structural understanding of a complex, multi‑market domain. Your focus will be on meaning, relationships, context, and interoperability not pipelines or warehouses.
You will turn messy, inconsistent, cross‑country data into clear conceptual models that support:
* Reporting and analytics
* LLM/AI‑driven search and interpretation
If you’re the type of Lead Data Modeller who thinks in concepts, not tables, this will be the most rewarding challenge you’ve seen for a while.
Key Responsibilities
1. Semantic & Conceptual Data Modelling
* Define entities, relationships, variants, units, and conceptual meaning.
* Ensure definitions hold across different markets, contexts, and analytical views.
* Build hierarchical structures, controlled vocabularies, synonyms, mappings, and cross‑references.
* Develop ontologies that improve interoperability across systems and teams.
3. International Data Representation
* Model how the same concept appears differently across countries, languages, units, and regulations.
* Build robust structures that support global expansion.
4. Prototype Development (in Code)
* Validate modelling ideas through quick prototypes in Python, Java, PHP, C#, or similar.
* Test scalability and concept viability using realistic datasets.
5. Domain Expert Engagement
* Work closely with non‑technical specialists to extract structured definitions.
* Translate real‑world knowledge into logical, machine‑readable models.
6. Multi‑Consumer Modelling
Design models that work simultaneously for:
* operational UI
* reporting and BI
* analytical pipelines
* AI/LLM-based agents
This requires a Lead Data Modeller who understands the needs of diverse data consumers.
About You
You’re likely to be successful in this role if you:
* Think semantically and conceptually before you ever think technically.
* Have experience in semantic modelling, ontology/taxonomy design, conceptual data modelling, knowledge representation, or similarly complex modelling domains.
* Are comfortable validating ideas by building lightweight prototypes.
* Enjoy turning ambiguity into structured, meaningful definitions.
* Ask deeper questions about meaning, context, and relationships.
* Have worked in complex domains such as environmental science, healthcare, energy, IoT, geospatial, scientific data, or similar.
Agricultural experience is not required curiosity and depth of thinking are.
What’s On Offer
* Competitive salary + strong benefits
* Remote‑first working (UK) with occasional in‑person collaboration
* 33 days holiday (including bank holidays)
* Weekly protected learning timeFull equipment provided (Mac + licences)
* High‑level ownership in a company where conceptual modelling truly matters
* The opportunity to build data foundations that influence real‑world insights and AI systems
If you’re a Lead Data Modeller who wants to work on meaningful semantic challenges, design AI‑ready structures, and define how a complex domain should be represented, I’d love to hear from you.
