Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust (LGT) are seeking to appoint a whole time (10 PA) fixed term Consultant post in Rheumatology for 7 months to be based at University Hospital Lewisham (UHL).

The successful candidate will join the other three substantive rheumatologists in supporting and further developing rheumatology services including meeting waiting time targets and undertaking teaching, training and clinical research.

Main duties of the job The post offers 10 core Programmed Activities (PAs) comprising 7.5 Direct Clinical Care PAs and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). The timetable is indicative of the expected responsibilities. On successful appointment, a detailed timetable will be developed which may differ from this example but the balance of DCC and SPA will remain the same.

The new appointee will work in a team with three existing rheumatology consultants at UHL, with internal cover for annual, study and professional leave. Clinical profiles vary by type, but allow 30 minutes for a new patient and 15 or 20 minutes for a typical follow up depending on the condition.

The job plan will be reviewed annually with the Clinical Lead providing an opportunity for discussion before agreeing the individual's personal development plan. The job plan will then be approved by the Medical Director on behalf of the Chief Executive. The Trust reserves the option to offer the successful candidate additional PAs in the future if the service requires.

Job responsibilities This post is intended to contribute to the general rheumatological work of the Trust. The post holder will be expected to provide appropriate expertise and leadership for rheumatology services, to provide teaching and training and to contribute actively to all aspects of the Trusts affairs.

Clinical Responsibilities

To provide high quality healthcare for patients referred for diagnosis and treatment as outpatients, inpatients and day cases.

To respond to rapidly to referrals from other specialties

To provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of absence

To provide professional support, teaching and training in Rheumatology for Nursing staff, particularly the Clinical Nurse Specialist

To support the Departments active clinical research programme

Medical Education & Teaching

To supervise and teach medical students in outpatient clinics and on the wards and to participate in formal teaching of the rheumatology syllabus

To act as a clinical and/or educational supervisor, including performing regular appraisal, and to manage trainee medical staff in conjunction with other consultants in the specialty

To provide postgraduate training in Rheumatology to all grades of Medical staff

To contribute to regular training and teaching sessions for General Practitioners and to foster increased rheumatology awareness and skills within the local Medical community

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

To support the Trusts Clinical Governance and Audit strategy

To participate in Clinical Audit and the development of Clinical Guidelines

To examine regularly service quality in rheumatology including formal benchmarking of relevant outcomes of care

To participate in relevant clinical audit meetings at departmental, and if required, directorate levels

Continuing Professional Development

Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level

Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice

Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy

A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels

e.

Policy, Planning and Management

Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care

Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines

Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service

Comply with all Trust policies

Person Specification Qualifications

MBBS or equivalent

MRCP or equivalent

MD/PhD

Registration

Full Registration with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice

To be on the GMC Specialist Register for General (Internal) Medicine and Rheumatology or to be within 6 months of obtaining CCT on a UK training program at date of interview

Research Experience

Understanding of clinical research processes

Leadership of clinical research project

Experience as clinical trial investigator

Clinical Experience

Broad experience in general rheumatology and all subspecialties

Subspecialty interest complementary to existing interests

Clinical Audit

Understanding of the principles of the audit cycle

Experience in leading and conducting audits

Evidence of completion of audit cycle and change implementation

Teaching Experience

oWide experience of, and commitment to, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (LGT is a main clinical campus of King's College School of Medicine)

Formal training in teaching

Formal training in, and experience of assessment and appraisal

Management and Administrative Experience

oUnderstanding of NHS organisations and the implications of the current NHS agenda and other national guidance and policy relevant to the provision of hospital medical services

Formal management training

Experience of management and service development

Other Attributes

Good communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work in a team

Flexibility to respond to the varying needs of a busy department

oAwareness of the particular challenges posed by an inner city multi-cultural, multi-ethnic community
