Job Overview
The Operations Manager is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of engineering maintenance services across a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment, ensuring that all activities are safe, compliant, reliable, and aligned to GMP and client standards.
Main Duties
1. Service Delivery & Operational Performance
o Lead the delivery of Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), Reactive and corrective maintenance, Minor works and engineering changes.
o Ensure services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with contractual requirements.
o Maintain continuity of operations across shift patterns and critical systems.
2. GMP & Regulatory Compliance
o Ensure all maintenance activities comply with GMP / GxP standards, statutory and regulatory requirements, and client-specific procedures and SOPs.
o Maintain full audit readiness and documentation compliance.
3. Asset Reliability & Maintenance Strategy
o Drive asset performance through effective PPM execution.
o Use predictive and condition-based maintenance strategies.
o Monitor asset trends and implement improvements to reduce downtime, improve reliability, and extend asset lifecycle.
4. Leadership of Engineering Teams
o Manage and develop maintenance managers / supervisors, engineers and technicians.
o Ensure teams are competent, trained, and resourced appropriately for workload demands.
o Promote a high-performance, accountable culture.
5. Contractor & Supply Chain Management
o Oversee subcontractors delivering specialist services.
o Ensure compliance with safety standards, quality requirements, and performance expectations.
o Drive value for money while maintaining compliance and safety.
6. Planning, Scheduling & Work Control
o Ensure effective planning and coordination of maintenance schedules, shutdowns and outages, and critical interventions.
o Use CAFM / asset systems to track work orders, monitor performance, and improve planning accuracy.
7. Performance Management & Reporting
o Define and monitor KPIs including PPM compliance, reactive response times, asset uptime, SLA/service performance.
o Provide regular operational reporting to account leadership and client stakeholders.
8. Safety, Risk & Compliance Management
o Ensure safe execution of all engineering activities in partnership with SHE.
o Oversee implementation of Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), Permit to Work (PTW) systems.
o Actively manage operational risks and escalates issues where required.
9. Financial & Commercial Management
o Manage operational budgets including labour, materials, subcontractor costs.
o Ensure delivery of services within financial targets.
o Identify efficiency opportunities and cost savings.
10. Stakeholder & Client Management
o Act as the primary operational interface with the client.
o Build strong relationships with site operations teams, quality, SHE, and compliance functions.
o Lead operational reviews and governance forums.
11. Continuous Improvement
o Drive improvements in maintenance strategy, reliability and uptime, and process efficiency.
o Promote use of lean principles and data-driven decision making.
o Embed a culture of innovation and improvement.
What we are looking for
* Degree or equivalent in Engineering (or relevant discipline).
* Significant experience in engineering maintenance delivery and pharmaceutical or regulated manufacturing environments.
* Strong knowledge of GMP / GxP, asset management systems, and maintenance strategies (PPM, predictive).
* Leadership experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams.
