Job Summary
The purpose of this role is to support the relevant Executive Directors to deliver an effective and efficient legal service for the Trust. The postholder will lead the operational management of clinical negligence, employer, property and public liability claims, inquests and any associated work. Maintaining accurate data to facilitate reporting.
The post holder will contribute to the Trust's clinical and corporate governance processes and will be responsible for line management of the team, reporting to the chief medical officer.

Main Duties of the Job
The main duties of this role is to provide legal competency in the management of a wide range of legal issues involving the trust. The service focusses on efficient and cost effective management of claims against the Trust within the guidelines of the relevant National Health Service Resolution Schemes, ensuring that contemporaneous advice on the legal aspects of issues is available to Trust Managers.
The service also ensures timely and appropriate engagement with external bodies including HM Coroners, direct interface with Trust Legal representatives such as Hempsons, and provides expert advice and opinion to clinicians to ensure practice remains within a legal framework.

Job Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of this role is to provide legal competency in supporting the trust to deliver effective and efficient legal services to ensure best practice for patients, families, carers and professionals. The postholder will provide specialist legal advice and opinion to support healthcare law decisions and practices including MHA, MCA, Court of Protection, claims and support to the coronial process.

Person Specification
Essential
* Degree in Law or equivalent experience plus qualifications
* Relevant specialist postgraduate legal qualification e.g. Legal Practice Course
* Experience of preparation and drafting of formal and complex documents
* Experience of highly complex individual or cluster case management
* Experience of managing complex claims in relation to NHS Trusts e.g. data breaches, clinical negligence claims, mental health, court of protection
* Experience of planning and preparing for legal hearings, managing complex caseload
* Knowledge of clinical negligence, mental health, mental capacity and healthcare law
* Ability to deal with highly complex and highly sensitive information and provide sound advice and service
* Able to work in stressful and complex situations whilst remaining professional and calm
* Ability to work with a high level of self direction, organisation and motivation.
Desirable
* Master's degree in relevant subject
* Experience of handling cases through Coroner's inquests.
* Knowledge of NHS local and national policy
