Job Title: Master's Clerk

HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. Background
The King's Bench Division is one of the three divisions of the High Court, together with the Chancery Division and Family Division. It is the largest of the three divisions and has the most varied work, which consists mainly of personal injury, negligence (including professional negligence), breach of statutory duty, media and communications claims including defamation, other tortious conduct, breach of contract and breaches of the Human Rights Act 1998.
T are currently over 100 High Court Judges, including the President of the King's Bench attached to the Division, and t are eleven Judges who are referred to as Masters, one of which is the Senior Master. A Master is a Judge who at first instance in the High Court deals with all aspects of a claim, from its issue until trial, either by a High Court Judge or a Master.
Role Purpose
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the King's Bench Division Masters Listing Team. The key purpose of the role is to assist the Listing Delivery Manager with the effective listing and management of cases allocated to the King's Bench Masters. You will work as part of a team of Clerks, in a busy and fast paced environment, liaising ly with an allocated King's Bench Master, other departments and court users to ensure the smooth running of the Masters' diary.
Main Activities / Responsibilities
The job holder will be required to undertake the following duties and responsibilities:
To forge a strong working relationship with an allocated King's Bench Master and oversee the smooth running of that Masters' listing diary, ensuring effective use of Judicial time.
To liaise with the Master and court users regarding the timely listing and progression of cases.
To ensure that the Master is prepared for hearings (including that bundles are available and outstanding CE-Filings are processed).
To accurately draft and seal orders and process applications.
To handle correspondence, deal with enquiries in person and via correspondence and control workflow; delegating actions to other team members w necessary.
Updating records on CE-File.
Manage remote hearings: set up and invites, and conversion of videos for storage.
Transcripts – processing of requests internally and externally.
Ensure that court rooms are ready for a hearing (including provision of any IT facilities needed).
Prepare statistical analysis when required.
Handle simple complaints
Supervising post opening
Supporting court ushers
To carry out monthly governance checks and ensure best practice is add to.
To develop a sound knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and the King's Bench Guide.
To be accountable to the King's Bench Division Masters Listing Team Delivery Manager.
Desirable Experience
Excellent customer and multitasking service skills
Good IT skills and knowledge
Listing and diary management experience is desirable but not essential as full training will be given
Other Duties
The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.

Skilled Worker Visa
From 22 July 2025, the Government increased the salary threshold and skills level for Skilled Worker visas. This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for sponsorship in accordance with the current immigration rules if you looking to apply for a Skilled Worker Visa for the first time.

Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements w business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites and / or from home (please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas). All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
Some roles will not be suitable for Hybrid Working. Similarly, Hybrid Working will not suit everyone's circumstances. Arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate(s) and subject to regular review.
For nationally advertised roles: All successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office nearest to their home postcode and on its respective pay scale. This will be at either a HQ building (subject to desk allocation, a Justice Collaboration Centre (JCC) or a Justice Satellite Office (JSO) – See Map. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity).
For current MoJ employees, your base location will need to be changed to the nearest viable office (to your home postcode), either at a HQ building, JCC or JSO within the National Office Network and moved its location's respective pay scale (any legacy arrangements/locations will need to be amended).
Some of MoJ's terms and conditions of service are changing as part of Civil Service reform. The changes will apply to staff joining MoJ who are new to the Civil Service. Staff joining MoJ from other civil service employers will transfer onto the new MoJ terms if they are already on 'modernised' terms in their current post or onto 'unmodernised' MoJ terms if they are on 'unmodernised' terms at their current post. Details will be available if an offer is made.
MoJ candidates who are on a specialist grade, will be able to retain their grade on lateral transfer.
All candidates who are currently in receipt of Mark Time / Pay Protection should ensure they are familiar with the new policy on permanent and temporary promotion which can be found on the employee intranet.
Flexible working hours
The Ministry of Justice offers a flexible working system in many offices. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. Annual Leave
Annual leave is 25 days on appointment and will increase to 30 days after five years' service.
