About the Role
As a Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering submarine maintenance programmes that are critical to the United Kingdom's defence capability. Acting as a subject‑matter expert, you will provide technical leadership, assurance and guidance across complex mechanical commissioning activities to ensure work is delivered safely, compliantly and to the highest professional engineering standards.
Responsibilities
* Lead and coordinate mechanical commissioning activities across submarine maintenance periods
* Provide technical assurance through inspections, testing and commissioning against design intent and specifications
* Engage with stakeholders, representing Babcock at meetings with the Ministry of Defence and relevant authorities
* Manage commissioning risk, contributing to risk registers and mitigation planning
* Ensure compliance with professional engineering standards, quality requirements and nuclear and submarine safety constraints
Working Hours and Location
This is a full‑time role, working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, based in Plymouth, Devon. Hybrid working patterns are available under local agreement.
Qualifications
* Extensive commissioning experience across submarine or complex marine maintenance programmes
* Strong background in submarine or ship operations or refit environments
* Proven ability to work confidently across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to adapt, prioritise and lead effectively in dynamic, operational environments
* HNC in a mechanical engineering discipline or equivalent relevant experience
* Additional engineering or professional qualifications are advantageous
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who can achieve a Security Check (SC) and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) clearance for this role.
