Highly Specialised Clinical Psychologist

We are keen to recruit someone who is passionate about the field of learning disabilities. The team consists of a 0.4 WTE Lead Clinical Psychologist, 1 WTE 8a Clinical Psychologist, 2 WTE Clinical Behaviour Specialists, 1 WTE Assistant Clinical Behaviour Specialist and 0.6 Art Therapist. The wider MDT consists of Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Community Nurses, Physiotherapists & Psychiatrists.

We primarily work with clients with Severe and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities who have unmet health needs. We work with clients with Mild or Moderate Learning Disabilities if they are not able to access mainstream services with reasonable adjustments. Our current service development work focuses on people participation, transition & STOMP. We are looking for someone with excellent leadership skills, clinical skills, and a commitment to collaborative MDT working.

We have several virtual MDT pathways within the team that focus either on Behaviours that Challenge, Complex Physical Health or Dementia. We sit within a Learning Network of three other Community LD Teams across ELFT that cover other boroughs. This is a rich resource of professional support.

Main duties of the job

* Ensure a high standard of clinical care for the clients under your management and those of more junior staff providing a comprehensive and appropriate psychology service to clients, families and carers
* Play a key role in the advanced assessment and treatment of clients who may have acute, chronic or complex presentation and determine clinical formulation and intervention required
* Accurately assess clients' needs and direct to other services as appropriate
* Maintain records as an autonomous practitioner
* Assist with the day-to-day responsibility for the leadership, delivery, management and evaluation of the Team.
* Plan and organise efficiently with regard to patient management and use of time
* Provide leadership alongside the Lead Clinical Psychologist, and deputise as requested
* Assist the Lead Clinical Psychologist to ensure staff are inducted, supervised and continue to maintain competences in psychology
* Communicate effectively with health and social care professionals and outside agencies regarding client care and progress
* Communicate with other members of the Team regarding policies, service development and management plans

Person Specification


Education/ Qualification/ Training

* Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS
* Clinical supervision training for Doctoral trainees and qualified Clinical Psychologists
* Eligibility for graduate membership of BPS
* HCPC registration
* Relevant specialist training or qualifications e.g. CBT, systemic therapies, neuropsychology, etc
* Relevant HR training appropriate to the post requirements. (e.g. recruitment, appraisal, sickness and absence, discipline, grievances etc.)
* Post doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
* Formal training in clinical management and/or leadership


Experience

* Assessed experience working as a qualified clinical psychologist for a minimum of 2 years
* Experience of working with individuals with challenging and very hostile behaviours
* Experience of providing consultation to other psychologists, other health and non-health professionals and to carers in all aspects of care of adults with learning disabilities
* Experience of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working
* Experience of staff management and clinical supervision
* Experience of teaching and training
* Experience of assessing and treating the mental health needs of clients with learning disabilities
* Work in a multi-cultural setting, including working with interpreters


Knowledge and Skills

* Able to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information in a highly emotive and sometimes hostile atmosphere, in a range of relationships and settings
* Able to use highly specialist skills of empathy to overcome barriers to understanding and acceptance
* Able to draw upon a broad theoretical knowledge base in the analysis of highly complex facts or situations to arrive at appropriate formulations
* Able to compare and select from a range of treatment options, based on formulation
* Skills in the use of highly complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management
* Able to plan, organise and prioritise own and others workload
* Knowledge of national policies relevant to learning disability and ability to formulate plans and lead local adaptation and implementation of such policy
* Competent use of other IT packages e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
* Knowledge of legislation and its implications for clinical practice with this client group
* Up to date knowledge of psychological research and national guidance relevant to the client group
* Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups e.g. people with learning disability with complex needs
* Able to provide a cultural competent service
* Able to innovate on the basis of theoretical knowledge
