The Role
If you’re a qualified accountant with experience of managing a finance team, and you’re looking for a role where your skills can really make a difference to more than just the bottom line, this could be the role for you.
As Finance Lead, Corporate Finance and Governance, you will be part of the Finance Senior Management Team responsible for delivering all aspects of a dynamic and efficient Finance Department, supporting the planning and management of the Force’s strategic financial plans. It’ll be a fast-paced role, where your team will be primarily responsible for the preparation of the annual statements of account for the Police and Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable, treasury management services and the annual medium term financial planning process.
The force has recently developed a more agile and smarter approach to service delivery, recognising there are a number of roles that can be performed effectively in the home environment, enabling greater productivity and improved work‑life balance.
This role has been assigned an ‘agile’ persona which means that you will be able to work flexibly at a force location or at home. The assigned ‘team zone’ location for the role is Forth Banks Police Station, Newcastle City Centre. Frequency of attendance at the force location will be determined subject to business needs and in agreement with line management.
What you’ll do
The key elements of the role include:
* Managing the welfare, recruitment, appraisal, development and discipline of the Corporate Finance and Governance Team; ensuring that learning and development needs are identified, delivered and supported.
* Leading on the year end closedown timetable and delivering the annual statements of account for the Chief Constable and Police and Crime Commissioner, including Whole of Government Accounts (WGA).
* Statutory, legislative and Home Office reporting.
* Monitoring and forecasting for the Police Pension Fund.
* Delivering the finance services provided to the Northeast Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU).
* Managing the Treasury Management service for the Force.
What you’ll bring
* A fully qualified accountant (CCAB, CIMA or overseas equivalent).
* Exceptional verbal/written/presenting skills to help you liaise with others with tact and sensitivity.
* Experience of managing/supervising Finance staff.
* The ability to prioritise and complete multiple complex responsibilities simultaneously.
* Evidence of Continuous Personal Development.
* A proven track record of problem solving and analytical skills (able to interpret data to identify opportunities and risk).
* Strong relationship and stakeholder management skills at all levels.
* Professional resilience and high degree of self‑motivation.
* Technically competent in the use of Financial Accounting systems and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
It would also be desirable for you to have had experience and knowledge of working within a public sector organisation, however this is not essential.

Terms of appointment
This is a permanent role subject to a six‑month probationary period.
