Role Description
We are looking for an Assistant Risk Manager to join our expanding Defence and Security Sector, supporting some of the UK’s most critical and high-profile programmes. This role is ideal for an early-career professional looking to develop their expertise in risk management within a collaborative and fast-paced project environment.
You will work alongside Project Managers, Risk Managers and wider teams to support the implementation of effective risk management processes, ensuring alignment with project and programme objectives and integration with planning, cost, and performance management disciplines.
Role Accountabilities
* Support the development and implementation of risk management processes, ensuring they are aligned with client requirements, programme objectives, and organisational standards.
* Assist Project Managers and project teams in identifying, assessing and managing risks and opportunities across the project lifecycle.
* Support the development and maintenance of risk registers, ensuring risks are clearly defined, assessed, and actively managed.
* Contribute to risk analysis activities, including qualitative and quantitative risk assessments, under the guidance of senior team members.
* Assist in the integration of risk management with project controls, including scheduling, cost management and performance reporting.
* Support the preparation of risk reports and dashboards, providing clear and structured insights to inform decision‑making.
* Monitor and track risk mitigation actions, ensuring progress is captured and escalated where required.
* Contribute to workshops and stakeholder engagement activities, supporting collaborative risk identification and management.
* Assist in drafting reports and deliverables, ensuring outputs are delivered in line with project scope, budgetary constraints, compliance requirements, and regulatory standards.
* Ability to attain BPSS.
* Ability to attain SC Clearance.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
* A relevant professional qualification (or working towards), such as APM Risk Certificate, IRM Certificate, or equivalent.
* Some experience or exposure to Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) techniques and tools (e.g. @Risk, Primavera Risk Analysis, Safran), with a willingness to develop capability in analysing cost and schedule risk models.
* Awareness or introductory knowledge of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) tools, such as Active Risk Manager (ARM), Predict! or similar systems.
* A developing understanding of how risk management integrates with project controls disciplines, including project/programme management, planning and scheduling, cost management, change control and reporting.
* A collaborative and proactive approach, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and engage positively with clients and stakeholders.
* Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret information, identify key risks and support the development of appropriate mitigation strategies.
* Good communication and organisational skills, with the ability to contribute to reports, facilitate discussions and support risk workshops.
* Some experience or exposure to risk management within projects or programmes (through industry, placement, or academic work), with a desire to develop towards programme‑level risk delivery.
* A degree or qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. engineering, project management, construction, or similar).
* Experience or exposure to risk management within the Nuclear or Defence sectors would be beneficial, supported by strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable
* An understanding of Cost, Commercial, Estimating, Planning, Reporting and Quality disciplines across the project/programme lifecycle would be advantageous.
* Ability to support the delivery of work to agreed timescales, with good attention to detail and a focus on quality.
* Ability to attain DV clearance.
