Main duties of the job The Senior Theatre Practitioner plays a vital role in delivering safe, effective, and high quality care within the Theatre department. The post holder provides expert clinical skills and leadership across all areas of the operating suite, supporting both surgical and anaesthetic teams to ensure the best possible patient outcomes. The role contributes to the wider team by acting as a role model, offering clinical supervision, and supporting the development of junior staff and students. The Senior Theatre Practitioner ensures that best practice standards are maintained, fostering a culture of safety, learning and continuous improvement. By upholding high clinical standards and promoting efficient use of resources, the Senior Theatre Practitioner directly supports the organisation's objectives of delivering outstanding patient care, enhancing service quality, and improving operational performance across the department. The post holder will work collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetist, nurses, operating department practitioners, and support staff to ensure seamless teamwork and effective communication throughout the perioperative journey. The Senior Theatre Practitioner reports directly to the Theatre Team Leader/Manager and works closely with Clinical leads, Surgical Teams and Recovery staff. The role also supports and supervises junior practitioners and students within the department. Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities To act as patient advocate and to maintain high standards of patient care ensuring that patient objectives are achieved using a systematic approach to patient care. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care, providing support to other members of the multidisciplinary team. To liaise with all patients and their relatives and ensure that they are kept informed of treatment and progress and to participate in the provision of advice and support. To promote evidence-based practice and to take an active part in any relevant research/audits being undertaken planning and initiating changes to enhance patient care. To ensure compliance with Infection Control standards, in line with Trust policy. To maintain accurate records of observation, treatment and care, teaching and monitoring others as necessary To provide clinical leadership to theatre teams To participate in the induction/in-service training of staff who are in their supernumerary period. To train and supervise junior staff in collaboration with the Education and Training Team To participate in the Continuous Assessment of Practice for pre/post registration course members and the assessment of competencies. To act as facilitator for trained members of staff undertaking professional development programmes as necessary. To participate in the ordering, checking and administration of prescribed drugs and other substances in accordance with Trust and local Policies. To assist in carrying out the transfer of a patient during the perioperative care within or external to the department, giving concise accurate handover. To adhere to the NMC/ HCPC Code of Conduct and Trust policies and procedures To act as a positive role model, demonstrating sound clinical judgement whilst giving advice to other professionals within their own scope of practice. Ensure all medical equipment is functional, reporting any faults or potential hazards to senior staff and arranging for replacements as necessary. To monitor the provision of resources and equipment and ensure that discrepancies are rectified, with due regard to cost effectiveness and efficiency of the service To arrange the care of patient's property, with their permission, in accordance with policies and within the limitations of hospital responsibilities Be familiar with and lead the action plan in the event of a major incident alert or exercise. Appropriately responds to emergencies or untoward situations in the workplace. Actively debriefing teams following situations and advise further counselling if necessary. With appropriate experience and training, work flexibly across specialities. To inform the person in charge of any untoward incidents, complaints or problems affecting staff/ patients/ relatives and visitors. To act up in the absence of an appropriate manager. To act as pastoral team lead completing annual appraisal and giving support on a daily bas PAH theatres covers 24hours 7 days service. PAH theatres is within good commuting roots and driving licence is not necessary. Successful candidate will need to go through occupational health and HR checks to secure the job. Person specification Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience Essential criteria Registered Nurse or Registered ODP Experience as a Theatre Practitioner in an acute theatre unit Awareness of professional regulations in the NHS Leadership Experience Clinical scrub skills – generic and speciality-specific Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice Good communication skills with ability to provide complex information in intense setting Foundation Management Course or equivalent Desirable criteria Leadership training / qualification Clinical management experience Experience in implementing change Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed Trust Values Essential criteria Patient First Working Together Always Improving
