This is a dynamic, high-profile role within the Finance Group, working closely with the Finance Director General (FDG) and the Finance Executive Team. It offers an opportunity to develop critical skills and gain insight into the workings of the Department and the wider government.
Role Overview
This key position involves working at the heart of the Finance Group, managing a portfolio that includes business planning, risk management, assurance, business continuity, financial allocations, performance, and portfolio management.
The role is ideal for someone eager to work in a fast-paced environment, handling diverse and impactful tasks within the largest spending department in Whitehall.
You and Your Role
As a vital member of the FDG team, you will provide leadership, evidence-based decision support, challenge, and advice. Your responsibilities include:
1. Supporting the FDG to advance the department’s agenda.
2. Prioritising tasks, resolving issues, escalating risks, and enabling the FDG to focus on key priorities.
3. Leading a professional Private Office that acts as an ambassador for the FDG.
4. Providing strategic and technical advice to facilitate timely, informed decisions.
5. Building effective relationships across the department and with senior stakeholders.
6. Ensuring clear communication channels on behalf of the FDG.
7. Monitoring and refocusing the FDG’s priorities, anticipating issues, and troubleshooting.
8. Attending meetings to progress actions and decisions.
9. Using data and insight to inform strategic advice.
10. Contributing to wider strategic leadership as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
11. Supporting the FDG and team with any other activities as needed.
The team supports three Finance Directors with secretariat functions, diary management, and strategic planning, ensuring high-quality support.
Skills and Experience
* Leadership and Judgement: Outstanding ability to prioritise, coordinate, and organize actions for senior leaders, working independently under pressure.
* Relationship Building: Excellent influencing and communication skills, with credibility as a leader and advisor.
* Collaboration: Effective stakeholder engagement across diverse groups.
* Leadership: Proven ability to lead teams and manage portfolios.
* Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of finance or working towards a professional finance qualification (e.g., ACCA, CIPFA, ICAEW, CIMA).
* Data-Informed Decision Making: Ability to analyze information and influence senior leaders effectively.
* Governance Experience: Knowledge of governance practices.
