About the Role
The CRUK Cambridge Institute (CRUK-CI) Research Instrumentation and Cell Services (RICS) Core Facility requires a talented research assistant who will deliver exemplary Cell Services to the Institute, providing practical support for cell line quality control testing services, cryostorage facility and cell culture training programmes offered by the Core.
The RICS Core Facility provides access to a wide range of high‑end laboratory instrumentation and specialised cell services. We support researchers at the Cambridge Institute, as well as many other University Institutes and Departments both locally and nationally.
This role is for the service provision of the Cell Services side of the RICS Core Facility. The role holder will be responsible for performing the routine Cell Services provided by the Core, supporting the three Cell Services laboratories (tissue culture training room, quarantine tissue culture room and cryostorage facility) and assisting the Cell Services Principal Scientific Associate in offering advice, training and technical expertise on cell culture technique to a wide user base. The role holder will also assist in developing new Cell Services workflows and techniques to improve services offered and work collaboratively with users to provide input to experimental design.
Responsibilities
* Perform routine Cell Services and support the laboratories listed above.
* Assist the Cell Services Principal Scientific Associate with advice, training and technical expertise on cell culture technique.
* Help develop new Cell Services workflows and techniques to improve service quality.
* Collaborate with users to provide input to experimental design.
* Run weekly cell culture quality control tests and ensure samples are safely banked in and retrieved from the Institute's cryostorage facility.
* Maintain database records and manage data for quality control.
Qualifications
* Degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific laboratory.
* Good practical knowledge of a broad range of laboratory techniques with the ability to interpret data for quality control and troubleshooting.
* Hands‑on laboratory experience in cell culture technique.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with staff at all levels, including external contacts.
* Highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
* Experience in tissue culture techniques is highly desirable.
* Database management skills are desirable.
* Flexible, cooperative approach to work and ability to work well in a team.
Employment Conditions
The appointment will be made on a permanent basis which relies on the availability of external funds that are not part of the University's central revenues. In the event that this funding should cease, the post may be at risk of redundancy.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
