We are looking for Medical Microbiologists to join our existing team of four consultants in the department of Microbiology at Great Western Hospitals.
Key Responsibilities
* Cover a total of 13 PAs over one or two posts with flexible distribution.
* Drive transformation and service improvements by broadening the scope of microbiology services.
* Develop strong working relationships with the medical microbiology teams at OUH and other partner institutions.
* Lead infection management within the Trust, including the provision of a comprehensive infection service across all departments.
* Provide direct clinical care and proactive liaison with consultant colleagues, other hospital staff, medical microbiology colleagues, Genito‑Urinary Medicine physicians, lead respiratory physicians for tuberculosis management, general practitioners, antibiotic pharmacists, IPC nurses, health protection consultants and CCDCs concerning diagnosis, management and prevention of infection.
* Make regular departmental visits to Intensive Care, Haematology/Oncology, Medical/Surgical admission units, and commit to IPC responsibilities.
* Participate in committees such as IPC meetings, Medicines Management Committee, Antibiotic Working Group, Sepsis Working Group, Pathology Directorate meetings and Microbiology Management Committee.
* Commit to multidisciplinary teams: Orthopedic MDT, Diabetic/High Risk Foot MDT, Cardiology and antibiotic pharmacy rounds.
* Develop sub‑specialty interests aligned with division needs and the Trust’s strategic direction.
* Teach, examine and accredit at undergraduate and postgraduate level, contributing to continuing medical education.
* Day‑to‑day supervision of diagnostic methods and specimen examination.
* Authorise and interpret results.
* Participate in policy and SOP preparation.
* Ensure quality assurance and participate in external quality assurance programmes.
* Achieve and maintain full accreditation with UKAS ISO15189 (or equivalent); accredit IDPS services.
* Business planning: assess and introduce new methods and plan for staff and equipment requirements.
