Main duties of the job

The Clinical Lead GP is a senior leader within the practice with overall responsibility for the delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based, safe, and equitable patient care. This role encompasses direct clinical responsibilities, strategic oversight, and the proactive leadership of a multidisciplinary team, including line management, performance oversight, and development of the clinical workforce. Working alongside the Practice Manager and Partnership team, the Clinical Lead GP will drive clinical standards, workforce resilience, innovation, and compliance with local, national, and contractual requirements. The postholder will lead on clinical governance, medicines optimisation, quality assurance, risk management, and support the implementation of service transformation. The role includes protected time to lead clinical service development, support workforce and performance oversight, and deliver on local and national priorities.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Supervision

* Providing confident, visible, and values‑led leadership to the clinical team including salaried GPs, ANPs, ACPs, nurses, clinical pharmacists, and ARRS roles.
* Offering day‑to‑day clinical support to peers and the wider team; acting as senior decision maker for complex, safeguarding, or risk‑sensitive cases.
* Leading and coordinating regular clinical and multidisciplinary team meetings, embedding shared learning and robust governance.
* Developing and delivering a structured programme of clinical supervision and mentorship.
* Supporting the Practice Manager in leading performance management and objective setting across the clinical team.
* Providing direct oversight of clinical appraisals, revalidation, CPD uptake, and clinical development.
* Taking a key role in clinical recruitment, workforce planning, and succession strategies alongside the Practice Manager.


Clinical Care

* Undertaking high‑quality clinical sessions including face‑to‑face, digital, and home visit consultations.
* Leading on proactive care planning and supporting the development of long‑term condition management pathways.
* May be required to act as the Safeguarding Lead within the practice.
* Contributing to completion of reports, insurance forms, medicals, and related clinical correspondence.


Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance

* Leading a robust and transparent clinical governance framework.
* Chairing significant event review meetings and ensuring learning is embedded.
* Ensuring compliance with NICE, MHRA, local guidance, and quality standards.
* Regularly reviewing and updating clinical protocols, SOPs, and safety systems.
* Developing and leading an annual programme of audits aligned to local priorities and national quality frameworks.


Prescribing and Medicines Optimisation

* Leading prescribing quality and safety across the practice, ensuring compliance with local formulary and national guidance.
* Overseeing prescribing audits, polypharmacy reviews, and interventions to improve outcomes and cost‑effectiveness.
* Liaising with PCN pharmacy teams and ICB medicines management colleagues.
* Driving reduction of unwarranted variation and optimising repeat prescribing systems.


Performance and Contractual Delivery

* Providing clinical oversight of the practice’s performance against QOF, IIF, QAIF, LES/DES, CQC standards, and public health targets.
* Using population health data to inform care delivery and address local inequalities.
* Identifying areas of underperformance, leading root cause analysis, and implementing improvement plans.
* Monitoring and reporting on KPIs, contributing to business planning and sustainability.


Service Development and Transformation

* Identifying opportunities for service innovation based on clinical need, workforce capability, and financial viability.
* Leading the design, mobilisation, and evaluation of new services (e.g., frailty clinics, minor ops, enhanced access).
* Contributing to PCN service delivery plans and helping integrate services with local providers.
* Working closely with administrative and digital leads to implement new models of care.


Stakeholder Engagement and Representation

* Representing the practice in PCN, ICB, LMC, and strategic forums.
* Actively building relationships with community, secondary care, public health, and social care partners.
* Engaging with the Patient Participation Group and patient voice forums to shape care delivery.


Workforce Development and Education

* Fostering a culture of professional growth, reflective practice, and wellbeing.
* Overseeing the delivery of regular clinical teaching sessions, journal clubs, and CPD events.
* Supporting and supervising early‑career clinicians including F2s, GP registrars, and clinical trainees.
* Encouraging peer learning and inter‑professional development across the MDT.


Person Specification

* Fully qualified GP on the NHS England Performers List.
* Minimum 2 years post‑CCT with demonstrable leadership experience.
* Proven ability to lead a team through change, challenge, and transformation.
* Strong understanding of NHS priorities, general practice contracting, and quality standards.
* Skilled in clinical governance, medicines management, and performance oversight.
* Confident communicator and influencer across clinical and operational stakeholders.
* Experience in a clinical director, PCN lead, or strategic GP role.
* Experience leading or contributing to CQC inspections and readiness planning.
* Qualification or training in leadership, education, or quality improvement.
* Experience leading multidisciplinary teams or cross‑sector clinical projects.
