Senior Health Care Support Worker (SHCSW)

Location: UTC Cumberland Centre (rotation may be required to Dartmoor UTC, Kingsbridge and Tavistock MIU). Full‑time hours 8:00 – 21:00, 7 days a week including public holidays.
Job Summary
The post holder works under the direction of Nurse Practitioners to maintain a safe, high‑standard of care. The Health Care Assistant (HCA) may be directed to fulfil certain clinical tasks by the NP under direct supervision. Once trained and assessed for competency, the HCA may perform those tasks without direct supervision. Preference will be given to internal Trust staff and to staff with NHS At Risk status.
Responsibilities
* Assist the Nurse Practitioner in the physical and psychological care of patients and support patients, relatives and carers as required.
* Report promptly to the senior nurse any problems that may arise.
* Comply with the quality indicator requirements for type 3 A&E/UTC/MIU departments in England.
* Perform clinical tasks including patient clinical observations, 12‑lead ECG, simple wound care management, urinalysis, blood glucose testing, appearance of POP and splints, health promotion, and ensure documentation is completed to the UTC agreed standard.
* Administer first contact or triage within MIUs as directed.
* Maintain stock levels, order from approved lists, and notify the manager of discrepancies.
* Maximise use of resources, time, and equipment and report defects and monitor repairs as required.
* Report incidents, safeguarding issues and complete Datix when necessary.
* Perform administrative tasks in absence of reception staff, manage stock and liaise with estate services and clinical engineering.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
* Level 3 (SCQF – 6) in City and Guilds 3 oNVQ 3 oBTEC National Diploma or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Level 2 functional skills in English and Maths or equivalent.
* Completion of Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (mapped to the Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Health Care Support Worker).
* Equivalent demonstrable experience.
Essential Aptitude and Abilities
* Effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Accurate completion of documentation.
* Awareness of healthcare work, policies and procedures.
* Commitment to providing high‑quality patient care.
Desirable Aptitude and Abilities
* Ability to defuse potentially violent situations.
* Ability to liaise with other healthcare professionals.
* Proven understanding of adult and child protection issues.
* Proven understanding of domestic abuse.
* Demonstrable experience in MIU/A&E.
* Proven skills in basic triage / first contact.
