About this job

This role is offered on a part time basis of 30 hours per week, this means that candidates interested in working part time are encouraged to apply and will receive a salary on a pro rata basis.

The Band 3 Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will provide essential support to the maternity team, assisting midwives in the delivery of safe, high-quality, and woman-centred care across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal services.

This role offers an opportunity for a candidate with an interest in phlebotomy to develop their skills within a maternity setting, supporting clinical procedures under supervision and contributing to effective care delivery.

The post holder will work closely with midwives, the perinatal team, and other support staff, ensuring continuity of care and enhancing the patient experience.

Postnatal Support: Provide practical and emotional support to parents and their newborn babies, assisting with feeding, infant care, and adjustment to parenthood.

Newborn Screening: Undertake screening procedures on newborn babies, including hearing tests, metabolic screening, and other routine checks in line with Trust policies.

Blood Clinics: Organise and run blood collection clinics (venepuncture/phlebotomy) for mothers and babies, maintaining accurate records and following infection control procedures.

Parent Education: Participate in parentcraft and antenatal/postnatal education sessions, supporting teaching and learning activities for parents.

Home Visits: Undertake postnatal home visits as a lone worker, providing assessment, guidance, and support while adhering to lone-working and safety protocols.

Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate and timely documentation, ensure compliance with data protection and governance standards, and contribute to service reporting as required.

Team Collaboration: Work closely with midwives, health visitors, and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and support service delivery.

Clinical Support

Assist midwives with routine maternity care, including monitoring, observations, and basic care for women and babies.

Support clinical procedures under supervision, including venepuncture and phlebotomy (following training and competency assessment).

Ensure timely escalation of clinical concerns to the appropriate midwife.

Support women with personal care, comfort, and information regarding procedures.

Administrative and Operational Duties

Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.

Support coordination of appointments, tests, and follow-up care.

Assist with stock management, equipment checks, and preparation of clinical areas.

Professional Development

Undertake phlebotomy training if not already qualified, and maintain competence in line with Trust policies.

Participate in mandatory training, reflective practice, and supervision.

Actively contribute to team meetings, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.

Teamwork and Communication

Work collaboratively with midwives, other support workers, and multidisciplinary teams.

Promote a positive and compassionate patient experience, respecting diversity and individual needs.

Provide support to colleagues during high-demand periods, including weekends and bank holidays where required.
