The College of Medicine and Health has a track record of world-leading teaching and research excellence and high levels of student satisfaction. The College provides professional training across a wide range of medical and health professions, in addition to a range of core foundational research activities which underpin the College’s Schools’ contributions to medical and health research and research methods, translational biomedical sciences, psychology and neuroscience, preventive health, rehabilitation, clinical intervention, and human performance and applied physiology. In addition, the College boasts excellent teaching and research facilities.
School of Health Sciences
The School of Health Sciences is the focus for the dental, nursing, midwifery, radiography, physiotherapy and public health programmes. Our wider portfolio of programmes a range of professional master’s degrees related to practice, health and social care, as well as a plethora of post-graduate programmes to support registrants in their continued professional development. We work in close collaboration with the North Wales Medical School and the School of Pharmacy to continue to develop our approach to interprofessional education and research.
Purpose of the Job
1. To teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of students and projects.
2. To develop teaching materials or methodologies, for example course design or assessment and being module coordinator or contributing to module co-ordination.
3. To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
4. To ensure academic scholarship, leading national standards (for Senior Lecturer level) substantial evidence of quality and an emerging international reputation.
5. To facilitate the development of new programmes in dentistry and across the school
6. To undertake School and College leadership roles and other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School of Health Sciences.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Working with the, Head of School of Health Sciences the post-holder will:
Teaching duties:
Grade 8 Lecturer responsibilities will include :
7. Support the development and delivery of innovative approaches (significant and sustained for Senior Lecturer grade) to dental health course design, learning, teaching, and assessment practice.
8. Support the development of student experiential placements, liaising with Health Education and Improvement Wales and regional Health Boards.
9. Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
10. Develop and deliver simulation activities relevant to dental teaching.
11. Be willing to contribute to the development and teaching of other relevant programmes (BSc, Masters, PhD, CPD, etc.) within the College.
12. Participation in academic quality assurance as relevant to the post, including having a key role in on-going curriculum review processes, including the review of modules and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms.
13. Champion Learning and Teaching and Student Engagement across the University and undertake a role (significant and sustained for Senior Lecturer grade) in the development and use of VLE and other forms of learning technologies.
Grade 9 Senior Lecturer Teaching responsibilities will include, in addition to the above:
14. Leading on aspects of curriculum development and delivery.
15. Developing collaborations in terms of teaching across subject and discipline boundaries, including in area such as inter-professional education (IPE).
16. Disseminate and publish results of research or scholarly activity as lead author in high quality, leading, peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, articles or monographs.
17. Develop personal and/or collaborative research projects and manage projects and groups with an emphasis on research output of a quality and quantity demonstrating national excellence.
Administrative duties and wider contributions:
18. Contribute to the School’s management, (e.g. participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes); and contribution to academic management, planning, governance and policy formation at School and College level.
19. Contribute to addressing aspects of student experience, recruitment and retention.
20. Contribute to the University’s mission (e.g. collaboration with other HEIs in the UK and further afield, promotion of equality and diversity, the Athena SWAN agenda and the Welsh language).
21. Contribute to the promotion and external profile of the University/College/School through the marketing of programmes and participating in University/College/School link activities and other marketing initiatives.
22. Undertake an active role in mentoring less experienced members of staff within the College/School.

26. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

29. The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their posts. Where disciplinary/capability action is taken, either the Universities procedure, or the NHS’s procedures will be used, depending on which are most appropriate to the circumstances.
Person Specification
Qualifications/Training
Essential (Grades 8 & 9) :
30. Be a dental hygienist or therapist registered with the General Dental Council.
31. Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area (or near completion) in a relevant subject area.
32. Minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment or a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.
33. Hold a PgCert for Teaching in Higher Education teaching qualification (or equivalent) and / or HEA Fellowship recognition, or be eligible to apply.
Desirable (grades 8 & 9) :
34. Educated to PhD level or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
Experience/Knowledge
Essential (Grade 8 and 9) :
35. Professional experience in the UK (at least 5 years) as a practising Dental Hygienist or Therapist.
36. Experience of module development and delivery in higher education.
37. Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
38. Evidence of effective teaching in Higher Education, with demonstrable impact on student learning outcomes (significant experience required for Grade 9).
39. Evidence of leadership of quality courses and teaching and departmental initiatives that improve teaching.
40. Evidence of involvement in academic quality assurance assessments (e.g. annual course monitoring, internal and/or external validation panels) (significant experience required for Grade 9).
Desirable (Grades 8 & 9) :
41. Experience in the design, development and delivery of innovative undergraduate curricula, teaching and assessment strategies, aligned to the GDC Standards.
42. Evidence of involvement in academic quality assurance assessments (e.g. annual course monitoring, internal and/or external validation panels, etc).
Skills/Abilities
Essential (Grades 8 & 9) :
43. Excellent verbal and written skills and demonstrable IT Skills as required (e.g. VLE techniques and other forms of learning technologies).
44. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative.
45. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.

Essential (Grades 8 & 9) :
46. Demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly in English, conveying ideas and concepts both verbally and in writing to a diverse audience.
Desirable (Grades 8 & 9) :
47. An appreciation of the bilingual context of health and care delivery across North Wales.
48. The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role. If applicants are not able to speak/write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
