JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal

Responsibilities
1. 1. Exercise of general professional duties
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including work under the reasonable direction of the principal or, when employed by a board on terms where not assigned to a single school, under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school where they may be required to work.
2. 2. Exercise of particular duties
To perform, in accordance with directions from the principal or board, such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned.
3. 1. Planning
1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
1.2 Teaching according to educational needs of pupils assigned to them, including setting and marking of work;
1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
4. 2. General
2.1 Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and groups;
2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters and future careers, including information about sources of more expert advice;
2.3 Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs where appropriate;
2.4 Communicating with parents;
2.5 Communicating and co-operating with others outside the school as approved;
2.6 Participating in meetings for these purposes.
5. 3. Assessment/Reporting
Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references related to pupils, as appropriate.
6. 4. Staff Development/Professional Development
4.1 Participating in staff development and performance review if required;
4.2 a) Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work; b) Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development;
4.3 Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on course development, teaching materials, programmes, methods and pastoral arrangements.
7. 5. Discipline/Health and Safety
5.1 Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety of pupils on site and in authorised activities elsewhere;
5.2 Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration, or pastoral arrangements.
8. 6. Public Examinations
Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing and supervising examinations as appropriate.
9. 7. Review and Development of Management/Administration
7.1 Contributing to selection and development of other teachers; coordinating or managing the work of teachers; contributing to curriculum, organisation and pastoral development;
7.2 Participating in administrative tasks, including supervision of support staff and equipment/materials; attending assemblies; registering attendance and supervising pupils as required.
10. 8. Number of days/Hours of work
8.1 to 8.9 specify working days, hours, breaks and related terms (as outlined in the original text).
11. 9. Staff cover
Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable, subject to school size and pupil numbers, in line with policy.
This job description will be reviewed in light of changing circumstances and is intended as a guideline within which the employee works. Section 1 – Essential Criteria
Essential criteria include holding a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; demonstrable experience of teaching to achieve positive outcomes; experience using a range of classroom strategies and digital media/technology; and registration with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland before taking up post.
Section 2 – Essential Criteria (Interview)
Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection policy, SEND Code of Practice, teaching strategies, IT systems and assessment methods. Skills include effective teaching and classroom management, inclusive learning environment, initiative, teamwork and communication with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community. Values alignment with school ethos; interview-based assessment.
Section 3 – Desirable Criteria
Desirable criteria may include additional teaching experience, experience with pupil progress monitoring, involvement with ICT in school, coordination of curriculum areas, and delivery in withdrawal groups. Shortlisting may apply these criteria as appropriate.
