Health & Safety Manager
Manchester – with a UK remit
£50,000 - £55,000 plus car allowance

NJR Recruitment are currently working with a well-established Wholesaler, who are now seeking an experienced Health & Safety professional to join their team in Manchester – with travel to other UK sites as necessary.
Role Purpose:
The Health & Safety (H&S) Manager will be responsible for leading the development, implementation, and monitoring of robust health, safety, and environmental practices across the business. This role will ensure full compliance with current legislation while fostering a strong culture of safety, wellbeing, and accountability at every level. Working in close partnership with branch managers and the senior leadership team, the H&S Manager will provide expert guidance, drive continuous improvement, and act as a visible champion of safe and sustainable working practices across all seven branches and the head office.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop, coordinate, and monitor the company’s H&S policies, procedures, and systems across all branches and the head office.
* Ensure compliance with all relevant H&S legislation, codes of practice, and industry standards:
* Conduct regular audits and inspections, and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
* Provide expert advice and guidance to management and colleagues on all matters relating to health, safety, and wellbeing.
* Lead incident investigations, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective/preventive measures are taken.
* Deliver H&S training and toolbox talks to employees, including induction and refresher programmes.
* Promote a strong safety culture, encouraging accountability and proactive risk management at all levels of the business.
* Act as the main contact for external bodies such as the HSE, insurers, and auditors.
Experience Required:
Essential:
* Proven experience in managing H&S in a multi-site retail, wholesale, or distribution environment.
* Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and best practices.
* Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to engage staff at all levels.
* Experience in delivering training and presentations.
* Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
* Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to branches.
Desirable:
* First Aid at Work or Mental Health First Aid certification.
* Knowledge of environmental legislation and reporting.
Qualifications and Experience Levels:
* NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification in Health & Safety.
