Main duties & responsibilities
* Chair-side assistance for the dentist. Speed and accuracy will be required during all procedures with little or no margin for error. Preparation of filling / Impression materials, anticipating requirements of the clinician and patient. Observing and supporting the patient during treatment. You are there to always chaperone the dentist and be prepared to act as a witness.
* Follow Trust/Local infection control procedures to ensure high standards of patient safety.
* You must have a broad knowledge of health and safety issues (e.g., COSHH, RIDDOR, sharps injuries).
* Assist the dentist during the taking of x-rays, participate in quality assurance.
* If appropriate, advise the patient/parent/carer on principles of oral hygiene as directed by the dental officer.
* Follow medicine management procedures in line with Trust policy.

Job responsibilities
Job purpose
The duties of the Dental Nurse are designed to maintain clinical and professional standards within the practice by working productively within a team. We offer comprehensive treatment for vulnerable groups, including children with social, behavioural and emotional problems, adults with physical and learning disabilities or complex medical problems, and disadvantaged groups. This may involve sedation or general anaesthesia when appropriate. We also provide an Emergency Service, IV sedation and a Minor Oral Surgery service in some locations. Post holders may cover other locations within a reasonable distance from base.

Planning and Organisation
Responsibilities include efficient day-to-day running of the surgery with dexterity in handling materials and instruments, anticipating clinicians’ and patients’ needs, maintaining stock levels, and knowledge of dental equipment and decontamination/sterilisation procedures (HTM01-05). Administrative and nursing support for organisation and delivery of epidemiology surveys; reception and admin duties as required; independent work managing department administration; maintain patient confidentiality; contribute to internal and external communications; adhere to Trust/local policies.
Communication
Liaise with patients, carers, healthcare professionals, laboratories and other departments; proactive in collecting patient feedback; ensure patient confidentiality; contribute to internal and external communications to raise awareness of services.
Budgetary & People Management
Budget: ordering of stationery, materials and equipment; stock control; handling cash from sale of products and patient income. People management includes supporting colleagues, trainees, and agency staff; local induction and training; acting as buddy; ongoing professional development and appraisal.
Clinical & Practice Governance
* Observe confidentiality and comply with Data Protection Act and CCS policies.
* Adhere to risk assessment, risk management and infection control policies.
* Maintain current GDC registration.

Person specification
Essential
* Qualifications: National Certificate for Dental Nurses or equivalent; GCSE English/maths (grade C/4+); GDC registration.
Desirable
* Radiography qualification; Dental Sedation qualification
Experience
* Ability to deal with difficult situations/patients under pressure in a busy service.
Knowledge & Skills
* Excellent communication/interpersonal skills; ability to prioritise and coordinate own work; flexible team player; advanced keyboard skills with IT systems (Word, Excel, Dentally).
