Offer description

We’re looking for 2 Regional Environment Advisors to join our Planning and Environment Team, we have 1 position available in South Region and the other in the Central Region. You’ll be based out of one of the following offices: Straiton (Ayrshire), Newton Stewart, Dumfries, Ae, Selkirk, Aberfoyle or West Calder.

The Planning and Environment Team is responsible for providing expert environmental advice and leadership to ensure Scotland’s national forests and land are managed sustainably. This includes protecting priority habitats and species, guiding land management planning, supporting timber production, peatland restoration, native woodland creation, and developing partnerships to deliver projects that enhance biodiversity and tackle the climate crisis.

As a Regional Environment Advisor, you will play a vital role leading the regional environment team, supporting the delivery of core programmes, and ensuring compliance with environmental law and good practice. You’ll also work with colleagues and partners to develop strategic approaches, identify funding opportunities, and deliver environmental projects across diverse landscapes – from ancient woodlands to peatlands and open hill ground.

To be successful, you’ll need demonstrable experience of team leadership, a strong understanding of priority and protected habitats and species, and proven ability in advising on environmental compliance and providing successful mitigation. You should also have experience working with a wide range of stakeholders and communicating effectively both in writing and verbally. A relevant degree or equivalent experience, strong IT and GIS skills, and a full UK driving licence (or suitable alternative) are essential.

Desirable experience includes: environmental or land management planning, coordinating protected species surveys, budget management, partnership project delivery, and membership of a relevant professional body such as CIEEM or ICF. Knowledge of native woodland, peatland or open habitat management is also an advantage.
