Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as an Emerging Talent Trainee Placement - Aerial Survey Team Assistant.
This is a full-time or part-time 8 week paid Emerging Talent Programme placement. You will be paid a £454 per week bursary (pro rata for part-time). There will be opportunities for hybrid working but some tasks will require you to be based in the York office. These include handling archive material and receiving specialist training. At times this could be up to 3 or 4 days a week.
Our training placements are for young people aged 18 to 30 years old across three audiences:
Black, Asian, or ethnic minorities
Disabled people
People who are disadvantaged by their social and/or economic background or circumstances
Purpose of the Placement
The Archaeological Investigation team and the North East & Yorkshire Regional team are collaborating on a programme of research and engagement work focused on the Yorkshire Wolds. This placement will assist the Aerial Survey Team in preparing for the upcoming programme of research and will provide an opportunity to learn the basic skills involved with understanding historic landscapes from the air.
In addition to the work with the Aerial Survey Team, the placement will assist the Partnerships team in its work to coordinate a programme of community-based projects. These are being developed to improve public access and understanding of the rich heritage of the Yorkshire Wolds and will make strong links with the wider research programme. The placement will assist with the work to develop these grant aided projects by providing administrative and organisational support as well as liaising with grant applicants and wider community groups.
The placement would bring their experience and insights to help us to achieve the project aim of diversifying the audience engaged with the heritage of the Wolds. They will gain an understanding of how archaeological research informs protection and understanding of the historic environment, leading to benefits for local communities.
What you will be doing
Assist with the collation and preparation of research material relating to the archaeology of the Yorkshire Wolds including aerial photographs, airborne laser scanning data (lidar) and historic environment information.
Help in identifying and collating existing literature on the archaeology of the project area and the wider Yorkshire Wolds landscape.
Handle and look after archive material.
Contribute to the project research through researching an archaeological site using aerial photographs with training and mentoring from the Aerial Survey team.
Learn and use basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills to collate historic environment information.
Work collaboratively with the Wolds project team and share knowledge.
Assist the Partnerships Team and Business Support Team with the administration of grant-aided, community-based projects which have been identified as part of the regional team project.
Assist with the administration of the network of community organisations associated with the programme and associated files and documentation.
Support the delivery of site-based events and meetings.

We will be hosting a Welcome Event for all Emerging Talent Placements in our London office on 24 July 2025.
Attend Aerial Survey team meetings; internal Yorkshire Wolds Project team meetings; stakeholder engagement meetings and/or events.

Our placements will enable you to gain valuable hands-on experience of working in the heritage sector, developing skills to enable you to take the next steps in your career.
Once you have completed your Emerging Talent Placement you will be eligible to apply for a 6 month Step-Up placement. These are paid training roles, based within a team for six months full time (part time will be considered). They are specifically targeted for people who have undertaken one of our Emerging Talent Placements over the summer, either this year, or in a previous year.
These placements are designed to give you that “step up” into a longer paid work in the heritage sector.
They will also help you develop your essential skills, improving your employability.
